San Francisco Hotel Triton and Bijou??

Can anyone tell me if they have ever stayed in the Hotel Triton or the Bijou? I'm planning a trip at the end of the month and I've never been to San Francisco (I'm an East Coaster) and I have NYC expectations. Thanks. Elisa

Bijou is in Tenderloin - please don't stay there. It's the area of drug dealers, free kitchens, grug dealing.

Sorry for typo - and I mentioned drug dealing twice. I meant homeless.

I have stayed at the Triton a bunch of times, although not in the past 3-4 years.

It's a funky, fun hotel that emphasizes unique interior decorations everywhere you look. The rooms are small, but you probably won't mind. Staff is friendly. I thought the hotel was well located, right on the edge of Chinatown and walking distance to lots of sites

Thanks David. Do you think it would be better to stay at the Triton than the Holiday Inn downtown? The Holiday Inn is cheaper, but I'm more interested in staying somewhere with a little more zest!

We stayed at the Palomar last December -- you might want to check the pricing -- we paid about $129. It was very funky and fun -- like one of the Ian Shrager hotels in NYC, but not as dark or pretentious. It's in a great location, right above the Old Navy store downtown.

I agree with Faina about Bijou. The Triton and Holoiday Inn Downtown I also would not recommend. The Triton is near union Square which in recent years has become a seedy area of the city. The Holiday Inn is close to Chinatown which is also quite dirty. Are there any other hotels that you are considering? Unfortunately it will be difficult to find a hotel that will meet NYC expectations. SF is very different from NYC. It is much like NYC was before the days of Giuliani. Cold you send him our way to clean up our city too?

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Bijou as part of an Elderhostel program.
I thought it was a cute hotel (even has a tiny movie theatre that shows movies that were filmed in SF - has a movie theme throughout the hotel).
Our room (in the back) was fine although small; a couple of the others in our group weren't so happy with their rooms, which were on the front (not sure if this was because of noise).
The hotel is on the edge of a not very nice neighborhood, but we never felt threatened. It was an easy walk to a nearby theatre to see a play & we could also walk to Market Street.
