San Francisco accomodations...any help appreciated...

Planning a much needed vacation for the beginning of August and am having difficulty choosing a place to stay. (I'm overwhelmed with the sheer number of places!) Does anyone know anything about the Cartwright Hotel on Sutter St.? How about the Vintage Court Inn?? While we'd like to keep our accomodations under $150/night I want to be sure and have a comfortable and enjoyable retreat from sight-seeing. Can anyone personally recommend a hotel that is within our price-range? Romantic getaway preferred. Any details/information welcomed.
Any and all comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
-Julie

Julie, do a text search on this forum for "san remo" to see info about the San Remo Hotel in North Beach. Under $150 and romantic in SF is NOT easy! This is a lovely little hotel though in a great location. Hope this helps.

San Francisco is filled with hotels and there should be some healthy competition for your patronage! What are the street addresses of those two -- I can probably respond to them location wise, tho not on the hotels themselves. You are right -- there are SO MANY! But there are blocks around Union Square that qualify as romantic, and yet a block away, something else again. You will walk and walk and walk. It is a fabulous city.

Thanks Kam and Diane.......

The now 3 hotels I have reservations at are:

The Vintage Court Hotel - 650 Bush St.
Cartwright Hotel - 524 Sutter St.
Prescott Hotel - 545 Post St.

Diane - Are you familiar with these streets? Or the specific hotels?

Thanks in advance!

Ditto on the San Remo. It will be a much better bet for you than the three you mention (as far as "Romantic" is concerned).

There are many smaller 20-100 room hotels in the area you mention that are reasonably priced, but the location can be intimidating for some.

Julie, Have stayed at the Vintage Court and the Prescott--they are both owned by the Kimco Group, famous for its clever way of refurbishing old, ratty hotels! The Prescott (at least in our experience) is much nicer than the Vintage Court......lobby, location and rooms. The Vintage Court is maybe 1/2 block farther to Union Sq. than the Prescott, but its general area is not as nice.

I agree that of the three, the Prescott is probably your best choice. With a couple of forum tips about the San Remo, it sure would be worth checking it out further to see how if compares in price. North Beach has some wonderful restaurants. Whether you stay around Union Square (we did) or in North Beach, you will be able to get around really easily to all parts of the city.

Wouldn't stay at a Kimco Chain if life depended on it. Stayed at many and last straw was when the staff was too stupid to accept office check at checkout. (Even though we paid in advance with same and checked first with manager by phone before arrival.) It was a Saturday and we were leaving at 7 AM and the staff wouldn't accept our office check for an office expense (the parking fees on the bill) and they actually threatened us that they would not list us on the computer as "checked out" unless we fork over our credit card. They refused to call the manager because he was at home and it was 7 AM! Find other places...the town is full of lovely hotels WITH INTELLIENT STAFF.
