Steve, Just please understand that you will see homeless people who will ask you for money and you will need to be aware of where your wallet/purse is when in Union Square. I'm so tired of hearing people bad mouth this area of SF when all it is is a typical city location as in many cities around the world. Be aware of your surroundings--you are in a wonderful part of our city. Enjoy your visit.

Kam was right to warn about the homeless in this area. I would disagree that the problem is "a typical city location as in many cities around the world."
Never, in all the cities I've been to, have I witnessed the numbers of loud, verbally abusive, homeless drunks as I have in San Francisco. The Union Square area (as much of the rest of the city) is covered with beer cans, liquor bottles and raving lunatics. In any other city, the police would not allow drunks to scream obscenities at women and children, especially in a tourist area! The SF police seem to have a live and let live attitude. Perhaps this liberal attitude is what gives the city its charm and makes it different from other places.
There are very good things about San Francisco. Just be prepared for the bums and the trash.

In response to the last posting, I too felt that Union Square was a bit gritty. However, I am from NYC so, unlike the gentlement from Atlanta, homeless people, obscenity shouters and drunks are par for the course. Union Square is extremely well located and a fun vantage point from which to explore SF. If you want cleanliness and quiet, Carmel is a an hour or so down the coast. Enjoy that great city, I can't wait to come back.

It's amusing to hear Union Square described as "gritty" to me. You're talking about one square block that contains a Tiffany's, a Saks, a Bang and Olefson store, a Porsche boutique, a Nieman Marcus, a Macy's, Farallon's, the Disney store, and two of the priciest hotels in the city.
If you want gritty, you should try the lower Haight, or spend some time milling about in Golden Gate park where the handle meets the pan (Stanyan between Fell and Oak).
