San Francisco
My husband and I are going to San Francisco the end of September. We have reservations for 4 nights at the Beresford Arms. I am a little worried about staying in Union Square West. Is this a safe area to walk at night to and from restaurants? Any advice would be appreciated.

Why, thank you, kikahead! What a surprise to receive a wonderful complement from you!
So, the nutcase is now posting as "Rigby" and finds Union Square "marginal" and he "never stays in Union Square." ah well... and, of course, I am "confused" LOL!
By the way, sfrancisco, if you are anything into art, try and see the Marc Chagall exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Beautiful, beautiful colors!

sfrancisco,
I am in the neighborhood of the Beresford Arms frequently and would not consider it dangerous. The later at night it gets, of course, you will be smart to use common city street sense such as avoiding taking shortcuts through alleyways, ignoring strangers who try to bum a cigarette, etc.
The location of the Beresford might suit you as well if you don't want to be in the congestion of Union Square, since it's a bit up further up Post Street.
Post Street has lots of buses running eastbound, so if you want to go to the Ferry Terminal or into the shopping district around Grant Ave., that's good. You are also within easy walking distance of the entrance to Chinatown, also you are just down the hill from Grace Cathedral. Have a wonderful trip - hope you get our warm "Indian Summer" weather.

We go to SF yearly for shopping and always stay at the Marine Memorial Club, Mason and Sutter, one block from Union Square. Whatever you do in the Union Square area, even if you only have one day, don't fail to have breakfast or lunch at Sears' (no connection to Sears Roebuck), across Powell from the Sir Francis Drake. They don't take reservations or credit cards, so bring cash and be prepared to wait in line, even out the door and onto the sidewalk. But I promise you, it's worth it! Strawberry waffles to die for!

September is a magnificent time to visit San Franciso. You'll be fine at the Beresford Arms, but I'd recommend keeping your wandering to places east of the hotel.
There's a fantastic map at the MUNI website with all the transit lines (including the cable cars) on an incredibly nice street map! Be sure to download (it's a beautiful pdf document) and print that.
