Interesting about Gary Danko. I knew it got such good press. I seem to recall a thread here which wasn't overly favorable -- or maybe I'm only remembering my friends' comments.
I think my favorite cheese plate I've had anywhere within the states is at Farallon, by the way -- it was simply amazing, and I've done it a couple of times -- always different, but perfectly selected cheeses to compliment and contrast with each other perfectly.

Yes, Farallon is sensational, and will try it soon. Thanks ... I have all the names now and am plotting a strategy to try them all ASAP, although it will take years, lol, I am sure. And yes, did add back Delfina's as you suggested.

There are so many exceptional restaurants in SF Bay area that locals tend to be extra hard to please and one of the favored sports is bashing the top places. New York is the same. I can't rate Gary Danko as I haven't been for a while.
While thinking about SF, I remembered two Chinese places. One is just crazy and the other is drop dead beautiful but comes with extra helpings of attitude.
The first one is Asia SF, the california style chinese restaurant with the transvestite waitresses. (gender illusionists) Only in SF. Lots of entertainment value here and it is a good restaurant with good service as well.
The second one is Shanghai 1930. I haven't been here for some time so maybe someone can make a current comment. LMF

We ate at Gary Danko last month.
Given all the hype and difficulty securing reservations (needed to be made 2 months out to the date), I guess I had high expectations.
The food was good. Not great. I was not overly impressed. The seating was tight. Pricing was fair, but we did bring our own wine so that may have skewed things a bit.
I will admit the main reason I reserved was for the cheese course. The cheese plate was very good, if you are a lover of cheeses.
Overall we much preferred Piperade on Battery Street.
