San Diego /LA beach with kids
We will be in San Diego in June for a seminar but not wedded to the Marriott Marina b/c we will have our 8 and 7 year olds with us and hubby is willing to commute to seminar. Have searched tripadvisor, etc. and Bay Club on Shelter Island, Embassy Suites in La Jolla (a little too business like perhaps?) look like possibilities. Willing to spend 5-600 per night only if it's worth it. Could split the trip into 2 segments, and could even fly out of LA if there's a great place for 2nd leg. Would like to be on or near beach. Definitely need nice pool and kitchenette. Thanks in advance.

I don't think the Embassy Suites in La Jolla would be such a great idea. I do like La Jolla a lot, though. The Embassy Suites is located in the inland area around UTC, which features mainly two malls and corporate offices. You might as well (or even better) stay at the Marriott Marina in downtown, IMO. To not get me wrong: Thea area around UTC is perfectly o.k. and it is about a 7 to 10 min. drive to the beach (and staying there usually saves a few bucks as compared to staying somewhere around Prospect St. by the Cove) - but then, the gorgeous beach of Coronado is just the same driving distance from the Marriott Marina.
Apart from that, I unfortunately cannot help with your decision, as although I have stayed at various hotels in San Diego, La Jolla and Del Mar, none of them featured a kitchenette.

Paradise Point is a popular place with families. Check out www.paradisepoint.com. I believe the rooms have refrigerators, microwaves and coffee makers.

i think the embassy suites is a very functional hotel with easy access to two freeways. directly across a busy street from a mall. it is a business district and a good 15 minute drive to a beach.
paradise point is great for families with beautiful grounds and several pools. however, you would have to drive everywhere. there is one restaurant on site but that's it. some people have complained that it is outdated and sometimes dirty so check tripadvisor.com for recent reviews.
www.pacificterrace.com/ is right on a beach and they have family suites with kichenettes
http://www.oceanparkinn.com is on the beach too. they have microwaves & refridgerators but not full kitchenettes that i'm aware of.
if you are there for more then 6 nights, i might consider staying at the marriot during the convention then switch to the beach for the remainder of the trip.
be aware that san diego often has "june gloom". the mornings may be fogged in during the morning. plan on activities inland for the a.m. and return to the beach in the afternoon.

Not sure why it hasn't been mentioned but with her budget I wouldn't ever consider a UTC hotel...you can stay on the beach with that kind of $$$.
If I were you, I'd stay at the mariott in coronado. Great amentites, VERY family friendly town and beach AND the bonus - your husband could take the ferry from the landing on coronado directly to the marriott marina downtown - no driving commute required!

Thanks- I've been remiss in checking this site- life got crazy. All of your input is appreciated. We are now going to Catalina Island with hubby's sister, etc. after the seminar, meaning we'd have to change 3 times if we stay at Marriott marina for seminar.
Paradise Point is very overpriced for what you get, based on tripadvisor reviews. I was hoping to find input on Bay Club on Shelter Island. Any takers?
