San Diego hotels
My husband and I are going to San Diego in January and would like a hotel near the water - bay or ocean. Humphrey's has a good price on Expedia but don't know anything about it. Any suggestions? The Catamaran is almost twice as much - is it twice as good?

We stayed at Best Western which is about a block from Humphreys - so can't comment on hotel, but can on location.
Shelter Island is a man-made spit of land directly across small bay/passageway from airport. We were amazed that we never heard a plane - posted a question here about that and responses had something to do with flight patterns. Since the "island" is so narrow, you get a nice view on both sides - not just the airport. You can see part of city, but main attraction is boat traffic and there is a marina on the other side. We were there during some type of troop training and there were more than the usual Navy ships cruising by our hotel.
There is really nothing to do right on Shelter Island - good or bad, depending on your preference. It is a nice walk from end to end - wide paths/sidewalks. Nicely landscaped. At the entry point to Island there are a few restaurants that are a long walking distance to hotels.
No beach (but it is January!). We found car transportation to everywhere easy and non-confusing from our hotel. Some people would prefer to be more in the middle of things - restaurants, bars, etc - but for us we enjoyed the relative peace after a day or night of activity.

As Gail points out it won't be warm enough to swim in January, so being on or near the water will be an aesthetic thing. I wouldn't pay extra to stay at the Catamaran.
There's a lot of info here from previous posts if you do a text search for specific names or even just San Diego hotels.
I really like being in La Jolla. Easy to walk around to shops, restaurants, on the water, easy to drive elsewhere.

Pacific Terrace Inn has great rooms with ocean views right on the ocean in Pacific Beach. Walk to restaraunts, etc. The Paradise Point is also nice on the bay, great rooms and spa. You won't be swimming in January, but the grounds are nice there.

Shelter Island is not right across from the airport. That is Harbor Island. Shelter Island is closer to Point Loma and, if you heard planes, they'd more likely be from North Island Naval Air Station. I wouldn't pay twice as much for the Catamaran, although it is across the road from Mission Beach and is on the Bay.

Lots of prior threads:
I love the old Tudor rooms at the Hot DEL on Coronado and the Hot LaValencia in LaJolla - both are very expensive and have been out of my "range" for a few years.
We stayed at the Shelter Pointe Inn/Marina in May which was OK and reasonably priced - lots of water views - we watched the USS Stennis (a new CVAN with 6000 souls) sail for her Far East deployment one morning with all her escorts preceeding and following - pretty impressive - esp., despite the end of the cold war, knowing she carries more destructive force than anything the entire world has ever seen.
Oh, two great nearby restaurants in Ocean Beach a few minutes away - Thee Bungalow and 3rd Corner.

To Barbara - I have no idea where Harbor Island is. We could clearly see the tails of planes from our balcony so well that we could read the insignia - so I called that across from the airport. However, you seem to either know a great deal about San Diego or are a local - so perhaps that is not what people mean in the area when they say "across from the airport" And the address of the hotel was Shelter Island Drive - so I am fairly certain we were on Shelter Island, not Harbor Island. And we said we DID NOT hear planes even though they were so close.
And we still liked the area and hotel.

gail, yes, I do live in San Diego and most people, including people on this board, seem to know that Harbor Island, where the Sheraton is, is literally across the road - Harbor Drive - from the airport. You don't hear any noise from planes there either. You were on Shelter Island which is further away from the airport.
