San Diego - Gaslamp or Old Town Hotels?
We are traveling to San Diego and would appreciate advice regarding whether to stay in GasLamp Quarter or Old Town? We would like to be centrally located and near activities/restaurants. Thanks for any hotel recommendations you can make.

You would probably get better prices in Old Town but there is a lot more activities / restaurants in the GasLamp. No matter what it is easy to get around. I usually try to stay on Shelter Island or Harbor Island. Would need to drive to both areas you mentioned but you are on the water and you get better rates.

Just another vote for GasLamp area!
Old Town is nice to visit for dinner, or spend a day sightseeing. The Gaslamp area is more centrally located, and there are great restaurants, the ballpark is near by, and you have quick access to the SD Trolley.

We actually stay in Old Town every year we go to San Diego. The Best Western Hacienda there, I think.
It's a easy choice between the two: if you want to "be in the middle of it all"...all the restaurants, nightlife, and noise that comes with it, choose Gaslamp. If you want more of a "suburban" hotel away from the action (but still a short trolly ride away), pick Old Town.
Oh, and if money is a concern, Old Town wins on that. But if I were going to San Diego for the first (and only time), I'd pick someplace by the Gaslamp or the Marriott area.

Honestly I have never understood why people elect to stay in Old Town. I think it is a lovely little area to go and check out - have dinner or lunch and take a stroll but that is about it.
Unless your room is free - I would stay in the gaslamp.
