San Diego...best time to go?

What can we expect weather-wise in mid-March? Will it be too cold to swim in the ocean? Is it extremely busy this time of year? When is their peak season?

The weather could be anything in mid-March, but it's more likely to be cool and possibly wet. The ocean will be much too cold to swim. I suppose our peak season is summer, but it's busy all year round. IMO, the best time to come here is July through November

We were there last year in February and it was a mix of weather. We had a couple "rainy" days where it would sprinkle for 30 minutes, clear up for awhile, sprinkle for another 30 minutes, clear up, and so on. The other days were partially cloudy but mostly sunny - shorts and t-shirt weather, but not warm enough to swim in the ocean.

The water is way too cold to swim in March. I always thought it was too cold even in June. I like sept the best - crowds gone, water can be great - the best day I ever had at the ocean was spent surfing on perfect waves in 70 degree water in early Oct.

Peak season probably ends after the first week in August because all the kids from Arizona have to be in school starting around Aug. 10

We were there Dec. 25-28. It never got any warmer than the low-mid 60s. We didn't see any rain personally, but apparently on the 25th (we got in that night), it was very rainy. I'd like to visit again when it's warmer.

when my relatives came down from canada in march, they spent many, many days at the beach. while no sane adult ventured past their angles, the young kids were in the water with rented boogy boards. it is very cold though but if you have kids, they can rent wet suits. march can be busy with spring breakers but it's not overwhelming. best time to visit in my opinion is mid september.
