San Antonio Hotels
Going to visit during Xmas holidays and can't decide whether to stay at La Mansion del Rio or The Menger. La Mansion reservationists were kinda snooty. Like to stay somewhere with great atmosphere and close to all the riverwalk action because we'll be walking. Help!

Another one to consider is the Wyndham St. Anthony. We stayed there over Labor Day and really enjoyed it! It's about 2 short blocks off the riverwalk, which was just fine with us! It's a very beautiful and historic hotel- many hollywood celebs stayed there when Planet Hollywood opened.

We ate at La Mansion and it was a really nice hotel with just an elegant feel. The restaurant outdoor seating was high above the Riverwalk which was nice. The hotel itself did seem snooty but the ambiance was wonderful with music in the lounge area of the bar. The Hyatt is nice as well.

There is a site that offers great prices on hotel rooms in San Antonio. Hotels are very nice and confortable. The site is:

Both hotels are great. Also consider the Marriott Riverwalk. There are three Marriotts close to the Riverwalk but this one is our favorite. It's a little older but the rooms are bigger and the best thing is the balcony (be sure to ask for a riverview room) the balconies are large (the ones at La Mansion are teeny) and you can sit and look out over the riverwalk (which is absolutely beautiful at xmas time). It's great in the morning and just before you go out for dinner. The Marriott Plaza is also very nice. The Marriott Rivercenter is our least favorite of the three -- nice enough but not enough atmosphere. Try Boudro's on the riverwalk -- it's fantastic -- but be sure to make reservations as it fills up pretty quickly. Find out about the various xmas markets and activities such as the boatride reenactment of Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem which culminates at the Rivercenter. It's very uniquely San Antonio.

Both the Menger and the La Mansion are similar in that they have older furnishings and are decorated accordingly. The La Mansion is located at a good spot on the river walk. The restaurant is under going remodeling (as of 3 weeks ago) so the restaurant has been temporarily relocated away from the River Walk. The Menger is not located on the River Walk (its close to the Alamo), but you can easily get to the River Walk by simply crossing a plaza and down some steps. The Hyatt has the best location on the River Walk. I guess you could say its in the "thick" of things. The Hyatt also has a popular bar/nightclub. The River CENTER Marriott is the most modern and largest hotel. It's located at the River Center Mall. It has big comfortable rooms (but most with no balconies), a nice restaurant that has buffets and that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It also has a bar which can get crowded at times when there is a convention in town (We just happen to be there last time when there was a game of Bridge convention- boooorrring.) You have to walk about 5 to 10 minutes before you reach the popular area of the River Walk. the hotel also has parking for rental cars. The River Walk Marriott is smaller, but the rooms have balconies, and its located on the River Walk, but not at the best of locations. One of our favorites is the Hilton Palacio Del rio. The rooms have balconies, and the hotel is on the river walk, although about a 5 minute walk from the popular area. We usually stay at the River Center Marriott because we like the view from 30 stories up, but the walk to the main area of the River Walk is just a pain, so we are going to try the Hyatt because of its location and night club. Whew! Hope all this mumbo jumbo helps somehow.
