Leaf watching in N.H./Vermont
I will be taking my family (wife and 3 teenage girls) up from D.C. to Providence, RI to visit a friend on Columbus Day. Will then have 3 or 4 nights in the middle of that week to meander up through N.H. and Vermont to look for fall leaves. Any tips on towns to base out of? Was told North Conway in the White Mountains was nice and convenient. Recommended reasonable places to stay (for 5 people) other than the chain hotels?

It is peak colors in northern VT and NH right now, so you may be a little late for northern New England. Columbus Day is when leaves in the Boston area start turning....go to www.newengland.com to get foliage updates.

Agree with above. Contrary to reports that fall colors might be late this year, they seem to be progressing a bit ahead of time and not nearly as brilliant as usual. I think following Columbus Day will be a bit to late to view foliage in NH and Vermont. But, you might try going to Western MA. The ride along Route 2 West (Mohawk Trail) might be nice - lots of nice towns to visit in the Berkshires: Williamstown, Lenox, Stockbridge, to name a few. Would book lodging forthwith...

Greg,
Just returned from up there! GREAT color. Do not listen to anyone that says this year is less than spectacular! However, they are correct. Foliage will be diminishing by next weekend. Good news: Route 16, Jackson, North Conway seemd a bit behind. Many leaves were still green. I think this weekend will afford some great color. I would also suggest getting a room ASAP!! Look at Jackson first. North Conway is over rated and expensive!
Have fun and yes there will be plenty of color yet this weekend.

By the way: Anyone that is planning a trip now as in the next few days head up to Route 2, route 115 in Jefferson NH great color. Also in Franconia - route 142, Mountain view road, Lafayette road, and route 117 are peak and spectacular! Also look at getting lost around Sugar Hill. Great color but soon to disappear around there due to rain.
