Safe/Unsafe Areas Key West
We will soon be staying at the Best Western Hibiscus in Key West for 6 days. I love to walk, especially in the mornings at sunrise. Are there areas that I should avoid walking alone?

I think, in earlier posts, other posters have mentioned areas that they feel "uncomfortable" in. I have been going to Key West for over 40 years, and I like to amble around first thing in the morning as well. I have never felt overyly uneasy in any section. Wary, perhaps, but not uneasy.

Fast Buck Freddies isn't safe for me. I spend too much money.
The Green Parrott isn't safe for me. I drink too much.
Seven Fish isn't safe for me. I eat too much.
Seriously, the only thing I can think of that may even be remotely weird would be Bahama Village late at night.
Real estate has gotten so out of whack in Key West that it is ridiculous.
Good luck and have fun.

I too get up early in Key West and wander. In five or six trips, I've never been the least bit fearful about anything or anyone during those wanderings. And I walk for at least an hour every morning. Once I was actually window shopping close to Duval, and darn near stepped on some poor homeless man who was sleeping on the ground by the window. Scared me half to death, but he slept through it.
That's the extend of my 'bad' experiences walking in Key West.
Do be careful on the sidewalks. Flat and level are not where they're at.

I spend lots of time in Key West and have never felt unsafe there. Having said that, I wouldn't venture into Bahama Village at night - or very early in the morning, either.
Like other places, Key West has a drug problem and Bahama Village seems to be the place where drug activity is thriving.

If you're looking for some good vacation reading, pick up one or two Lawrence Shames paperbacks before you go. He writes humorous detective fiction set in Key West. I was turned on to him after I tapped out Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiassen and Tom Corcoran, all of whom write in the same genre of Florida crime (usually with idiotic criminals providing the humor).
I've never been to Key West, but reading Shames both makes me want to go and makes me feel like I already know the place!

There is a rooftop bar 2 floors above The Bull. (At least there was 4 years ago). After an arguement with my bf I went storming up there to get some air & was halfway across before I realized I was the only one with clothes on. I'm still proud I did not break stride. But seriously, I walked around several mornings and never felt unsafe.
