Sacramento airport to San Francisco

Will be arriving at Sacramento airport late evening. Any suggestions on a place to stay near the airport, but on the way to San Francisco?
Will be heading to San Francisco the next morning It will be May 18th, the saturday of the Bay to Breakers Race.
Please advise as to best route and time to travel to San Francisco. We will be staying at the Tuscan Inn at Fisherman's Wharf.
Thanks.
Jan

There are lots of hotels along I 5 near downtown and old sac that would be convenient but I don't know if that's the kind of lodging you want. In the downtown area which is still easy on and off I5 is the Hyatt and the Sheraton Grand. (The Embassy Suites is supposed to open soon. It's adjacent to Old Sac and would be convenient if it's avaialable.

What kind of lodging are you in search of?

Leaving Sacramento you need to get on 80 going west. So if you stay off of I5 you will head south very briefly and change to 80. You'll stay on 80 all the way and then go over the bay bridge into SF.

Sacramento airport is NW of the city of Sacramento and there is no need to drive into Sacramento if you are going to San Francisco. From the airport, head north on Interstate 5 towards Woodland (about 5 miles). At Woodland, take the Main St. exit and then get on Hwy 113S towards Davis. At Davis, you will get on Interstate 80, which will take you all the way into San Francisco. The total distance is about 90 miles. To be safe, allow yourself about 2 hours driving time on a saturday. There are motels located in Woodland, Davis and all along Interstate 80 that you could stay at. It really depends on how far you want to drive after arriving at Sacramento airport. You could also stay at the hotel that is located right at Sacramento airport.

Jan--if you're getting in late and all you're doing is going to the hotel/motel to crash, just find a place off Richards Blvd (Jibboom St.), which is south of the airport off Hwy 5. There is a Comfort Suites, La Quinta, Best Western and a bunch more.
I assume you're running in the Bay to Breakers? Keep in mind it will be a nightmare getting across the Bay Bridge in the a.m. and worse still getting around the city--unless you're getting up very, very early. A better choice would have been to stay in SF the night before the race.

Looks like Jan is getting to SF the day before the run. Should be ok.

I don't personally like Tony's directions but that's a personal prefernece thing. Extremely minor point.

I picked up a passenger at SMF, took I5 south and then 80 east to Sonoma and did it all within 1 hour. I don't think going to Woodland would have improved the time at all.

Have to agree with Tony. Doesn't make much sense to back track into Sacramento unless you want to go there for some reason.

Looks like Jan wants a place to lay her head after her flight in. Why fly and drive with no rest? Maybe she wants to get out of small spaces and stretch her legs awhile before the drive to SF. Is driving to SF on a Friday evening really that much fun?

If Jan isn't that familiar w/ the Sacto area, I'd stay on I-5 towards Sacto then hit I-80 west and stay off some of those famously confusing Calif County Roads. (Yes-I got lost going from Davis to Winters' Buckhorn Steakhouse;-D).
You never know what the traffic on I-80 will be from hour to hour nowadays, tho.

Depending on what time you get into Sacto, you may wish to take a short drive down towards SF and stay at one of the new hotels that seem to be popping up along the I-80 corridor in the Davis, Dixon, Vacaville, Fairfield areas. This way you can get an early start the next a.m.
And since the traffic may be killer over the Bay Bridge you may wish to cut off I-80 at Vallejo and take 37 to 101 and come in over the GGate. The Tuscan can be easily reached from VanNess/Hwy 101.
Have a safe trip Jan. Doesn't look like Mrs Kal will be running the B2B this year. Too many prior commitments. Have an Irish Coffee (or 2) at the Buena Vista in my honor!

I agree that Tony's directions are the shortest, but I got lost going that way as well. It is easier if it is daylight, but at night the signage is in need of improvement. If it were me I would get probably make my way to 80 and check into a freeway hotel and keep focus on getting to SF. That way you save money, keep on track, and take care of yourself.
