quiet hotel north of san francisco?
We are not city people and will only be spending a day in SF to see Stu's best views and ride the cable cars. Where might we spend the night before that's close enough to put us in SF for the day and then fly out of SFO. What areas north are nice? Novato? San Rafael? Or anything to the east? Thank you for any help.

How about Bodega Bay Lodge - it's a quite little place about 1hr or so up the coast from SF. Well, it's quiet unless the birds are spooked then all bets are off.
Not sure where you're coming from - that'll make a big difference.

Got the perfect place for you - Inn Above Tide in Sausalito. We've stayed there quite a few times. We really enjoyed the view of the SF skyline, being right over the water, seeing the sailboats and kayaks below us and the intimacy of the hotel.

One more note, if you are flying out of SFO the next day and don't want to stay in the City, why not stay at the airport? There are plenty of hotels at the airport. You can take BART in and out of the area and a shuttle to the airport.

Newbe - we once spent a couple of nights, including the 4th of July, there. From our room, we could see the fireworks from the SF wharf, from Sausalito, from Tiburon, Giant's Stadium and Oakland. Obviously, it wasn't foggy and it was so much fun! We walked up the hill to Sushi Ran, for scrumptious, scrumptious sushi and strolled the streets of Sausalito, taking it all in. Breakfast and afternoon wine comes with your stay.

It's very walkable. You can take the ferry to and from SF, too. http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/ It's also fun to take the Golden Gate Bridge back and forth.

Researching for San Francisco Bay area lodging and ran across a notice that the Fort Baker (Marin Headland end of Golden Gate Bridge) was now open
It was on a high price luxery property Hotel site: I can't remeber which one: pictures were awesome and so were the prices.

CavalloPoint The Lodge at the Golden Gate
Has anyone been to visit/stay yet?
Wouldn't this be a great Fodors GTG site?
Maybe Fodors would do a win a trip contest?

Here's a link to the actual website. It opens on the 14th. (I never even heard of it, and I live here!)
