Sacramento

My husband & I are taking a train trip & may have up to 7 hours in Sacramento & would like some ideas of what to do. There is a train museum next to the depot but it closes about an hour after we arrive. Unfortunately, our down time will be around 4 pm to midnight.

We have been thru Old Sacramento & checked out the marvelous entrance to the nearby courthouse.

We will be there in mid Sept. Any ideas would be welcomed.

There are great restaurants and art galleries in the downtown/midtown area. You might even be able to attend a play http://www.californiamusicaltheatre.com/

or

http://www.ticketstogo.com/cityguides/CA/Sacramento/

or the I-Max theatre. http://www.imax.com/sacramento/

There is the Crocker Art Museum http://www.crockerartmuseum.org

The governor's mansion:

CELEBRATION – The Governor's Mansion State Historic Park will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Recent restoration will be unveiled as well as the third floor will be open to the public for the first time.
When: Sept. 22
Location: Governor's Mansion State Historic Park, 16th and H Street, Sac
Cost: Call
More Info: 916-323-3047 or www.parks.ca.gov

Just some ideas. Hope you have a great trip. I've always wanted to take a train trip, but haven't yet.

What evening will you be in Sacramento?

Crocker Museum is open until 9PM on the first and third Thurs. of each month. Delta King (the old paddle wheel boat) has mystery theater weekend nights. The Capital City Theater may have a play running.

Do you want to be able to just walk or would you venture farther in a cab? Other options are available if we know which evening you will be here.

Perhaps dinner and a movie. Many choices for dinner nearby and the movie complex in Downtown Plaza. With 7 hours, you have lots of options.

Check out Delta King if they have mystery dinner or a play when you are there.

When are you coming? The state fair starts on August 15th and it's opened late!

Thanks for the help. We will be arriving on September 19th, a Friday. Amtrak has been running several hours late so we really have no idea when we will arrive or when the train to Seattle will arrive. Several years ago it was a few hours late too.

This is our 2nd major train trip. We did a big circle in 2001 & were in Lake Louise on 9-11. We went on to Nova Scotia, rented a car & had too little time in the Maritimes-another day we will remedy that. This time we take the Rocky Mountaineer & then switch to VIA from Jasper to Toronto & then on to Buffalo to get to Chicgo & then back to CO.
