1 yr anniversary in Winnipeg

We are planning on going to winnipeg for our 1 year anniversary in mid june. Neither one of us have been there before and don't have a clue what to do, where to stay and what to see. Am looking for any available help, we both are so lost. Thanks in advance. We would also like this trip to be romantic.

The best hotel is the Delta.

Depending on the time frame, the things to do include:

Lounge al Fresco on Corydon Avenue.
Don't miss Nucci's Gelato - the best.

Tour the Art Gallery, Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature, the Forks area and the Legislative Building.

Put on your walking shoes. Walk down Wellington Crescent pathway to Assiniboine Park. The sculpture garden and English garden are a unique place in Canada. Cross the bridge to Portage
Avenue for ice-cream or coffee.
Return via the bus to downtown or walk
back down Wellington Crescent until you reach a set of railway tracks.
Cross the Assiniboine and walk down
Wolesley Avenue.

For shopping, the major mall is Polo Park and Garden City as well as the downtown mall. A good bookstore and bistro is located at (McNally Robinson) and movie theatre is located at the Grant Park Shopping Centre.

For boutique shopping, check out Corydon and Academy avenues. Be sure to visit Stoneware Studios on Corydon for incredible pottery.

Take a side trip up to Fort Gary and then on wards to Grande Beach. Another
side trip is to Gimli.

Restaurants - Pasta La Vista is one
of my favourites - it's kitty corner to the Delta.

The Tavern on the Park in Assiniboine Park is an excellent place for fine dining.

A plate of perogies and a pint of beer at the airport is a tradition I have since I moved from Winnipeg.

Much of the cultural scene is off to the cottage for the summer.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is on in July.

Mamma Mia is comming to the Manitoba Theatre Centre in August.

Here is something new and interesting to see in Winnipeg. One of the main streets is decorated with huge bears painted by local artists.

In case you prefer Jazz to Folk music the Winnipeg Jazz Festival is on from the 16-25 of June.

The Delta? That used to be the Holiday Inn where I have stayed. I always thought The Fairmont Winnipeg was the best hotel (formerly The Westin). One of the best meals I had in Winnipeg was at Alycia's, 559 Cathedral Ave. It is Ukrainain food served in an old house. If I recall you walk through the kitchen to get to the dining area!

I definitely agree with Hogtown Jim, you have to go to Nucci's Gelato on Corydon--especially if the weather's warm, it's a refreshing delicious treat (try the grapefruit, or the super-dark chocolate)--if you go in the evening on a warm night, the atmosphere is great as you walk down the street taking in the sounds and sights...it can be quite romantic!
Currently the "Bears on Broadway" is a neat attraction, plus it's free!
Another great place to eat is called "Jennifer's" but I'm not sure of the location...it is worth checking out if you want to try something different--last time I ate there I tried ratttlesnake soup! They have all kinds of wild stuff to try.
For a great chili burger and shake, go to the Dairy-whip on Marion Street. It's just a little burger stand, but it's GOOD!

Also, I forgot, shopping in Osborne Village (on Osborne St.) is nice too, lots of quaint little shops selling handmade jewellery and trinkets as well as teas, chocolates, clothes etc. You wouldn't need more than an afternoon there, but Corydon is nearby so you could go there after for a romantic dinner on an outdoor patio, followed by gelati at Nucci's and a nice long walk...Perfect!

There is also a new Ghost tour of Winnipeg. I have done them in other cities and they are a bit of fun. Here's the link.
