Running in San Francisco?

We're staying at the Fairmont in San Francisco in April and I'm wondering if there are any good places to run nearby?

Thanks!!

Also, any great places to get breakfast?

All of San Francisco is good for running if you like hills. I live and work here, and there is an abundance of beautiful places to run: take your pick. From the Fairmont you'll probably run *down* somewhere and then *up* back to the hotel; I prefer to have the easy part at the end, but either way you'll be rewarded with great views.

I can't think of good breakfast spots by the Fairmont, but perhaps someone else will.

Don't know about breakfast, but that run along the Embarcadero (described in the Runners World article above) is great. Go fairly early in the morning and the sidewalk is not crowded.

I've done the Embarcadero run from Hyatt Embarcadero up past Fishermans Wharf, and back. Living in FL, and being a flatlander, it was perfect for me!

I should add, I did it early too and felt perfectly safe by myself.

Golden Gate Park from the Panhandle to the beach is all downhill. Hyatt to the bridge is great. Hyatt to the bridge and across the bridge and back is better. You can run up Lombard and down the crooked part of Lombard...tourists applaud when you get to the bottom. If you blow a hamstring or your Achilles, you are screwed in SF. One block East your hotel, two cable car lines cross. To the West of your hotel, and down the hill at 1574 California,is your new favorite SF restaurant, Cordon Bleu...a true gem. Google it.

Thanks for all of this great information! I'm easing back into running so flat works for me while my husband can tackle the hills.

Thanks for that link, maryanntex! I will be printing that off and taking it with me.

Thanks again! I'll need mulitple runs to work off all these great meals I plan to have based on Fodorite recommendations.

I love to watch Mrs Kal run in SF while I keep a chair warm for her at The Buena Vista Cafe! Good breakfast there too.

As mentioned before, Embarcadero is nice and flat for you....so are some parts of the Marina Distr.

On a related note, how can I find a comprehensive list of fun runs in San Francisco? For example, for Memorial Day weekend? I only found a 5K run so far....I'd like something 10K or longer.....

The Bay to Breakers race is the weekend before: http://www.ingbaytobreakers.com/main.html

http://www.caltrack.com/calendar/smu.html This one doesn't show any runs on Memorial Day, but some may show up later on.

If you go to www.runnertriathletenews.com, you can look for running and triathlon events anywhere.

Or check here: http://www.sfrrc.org/

Kal-
Thanks for that breakfast recommendation. I may follow suit and keep a chair warm while the husband is out tackling those hills!

As I mentioned above, I am used to hills (just ran up to Twin Peaks this morning--clear skies, great views, a number of tourists, and a red-tailed hawk), but another great run I do is through Golden Gate Park and out to the beach. Someone mentioned it on a previous post. It's a nice way to explore the park, and then breakfast at the Beach Chalet, while not incredible cusiine, comes with views of the Pacific Ocean.
