There is alot of original sights in Missouri on the Route 66. Chain of Rocks bridge between the Illinois/Missouri border. Diamond's restaurant and Gardenway Motel, original did burn but the old sign is still there. Villa Ridge, Mo. Sunset Motel and the sign is still in Villa Ridge. Meramec Caverns although not part of Route 66 a short distance and was a famous stop off point for travelers doing Route 66. Bourbon Lodge, Bourbon, Mo. Wagon Wheel Motel still in operation. 4M Vineyards, St. James Mo they had to move it somewhat off the highway, still on Route 66. People would stop on I44 to run across to purchase wines etc. So they had to re-route a short distance. Elbow Inn now a bar, and Shelden's Market.John's Cabins which are in ruins and the Interstate System sounded the death of the cabins but they are still there. Munger Moss Motel still in operation on Route 66 in Lebanon Mo.The 66 Drive In Theatre opened in Sept 1949 located on Rt 66 in Carthage, Mo. Still in operation. These are all things we saw, I have pictures etc. And there is alot more. Once we saw afew of the signs and old buildings we could spot and recognize them. We took this trip in October of 2004.

Caph, I grew up about 3 blocks from Hiway 50/56 and the Santa Fe Trail in Suburban KC,
right by the Shawnee Indian Mission. It's always captured my imagination. I've never gone east beyond Illinois, but I've traveled it all to the west. It actually IS what people expect US 66 to be. Not an Interstate in sight for most of the length,
and still the lifeblood of the small towns along it's route.

I suspect that's still the case coast to coast, bbqboy. I sure would like to make that entire trip someday!
