With today being #InternationalWomensDay, it seemed like the perfect time to highlight our recent journey. A few weeks ago, Tracy and I stopped at the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond (East Bay San Francisco). During World War II, four Richmond shipyards were built along the waterfront. This museum highlights the women (along with people of color, people with disabilities and older Americans) who received the opportunity to make a living … some for the first time. Rosie the Riveter became an iconic figure in American history, and the story of all the “Rosies” around the country is a fascinating one. The museum does not take a long time to visit, but it is chock full of history.

We have visited it twice (2nd time with my WWII Vet FIL). Extremely interesting - and great views of the bay too.

We went with kids, all 6 of us loved this museum, so much historical info! The restaurant next door was surprisingly good. Oh, and don't miss the gift shop

We went home after lunch, but the kids stayed on to hike in the area.

"Riveting" indeed. Sorry I missed this, maitaitom. Amazing information. Must say I was more saddened by what has gone on with women and minorities--wish we could all get together.

FWIW, the "Duck" amphibious ride we took in Baltimore was built by women.

Thanks to this thread my husband and I visited the museum last week when we were visiting friends in the Oakland area. It is a great museum with, as mentioned, fantastic views of the bay. We heard a brief talk by a woman from the Richmond area who was in one of the Japanese internment camps during WW II and that was very interesting. Apparently she did not speak about her experiences for many years but was moved to do this in recent years as she watched anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment growing in the U.S.

Thanks for sharing VT. It's not a well known museum and off the beaten path, but definitely worth the effort if you are in the Bay area,
