I'm always amazed at how people jump on me when I suggest leaving a tip for the maids--"they're paid well, they don't need more" is a common response. Anyone who thinks that has never seen the mess left in a hotel room by a slob.

I am with you, Underhill. Hard to believe that anyone on a travel board would jump on you about that. We leave $5-$10/night depending on how big the room is.

I know this is old thread but what do you think if the room service is from a 3rd party restaurant/ delivery service that is from off-site? I see a $3.50 packaging fee, is that the tip? Of course it says gratuities are greatly appreciated

Yes, old thread. I guess my new take on it is -- a service charge covers the server. Period. But anyone who wants to give a couple extra bucks -- fine. Or an extra 20, or 50, or 500 for that matter. I'll never understand why people are so concerned if others want to give away money. That's their right. But if you want to know what is "right" or "expected" the answer is a service charge acts as a tip.

Funny to see a thread on tipping on US board. We never get tired of those on Europe board.

Perso I never order room service but if I did I'd give a tip...

I wouldn't think so, I think it is what it says it is, a fee for the packaging to deliver. They do have to have special packaging to do that, and take the time to pack it up. Of course it's more than such packaging would cost, but what else is new. If it said "service", then I'd call it a tip as that's what a tip is to me, a service fee.

I agree with Christina. The deliver person in that particular case deserves a tip.
