Will spend a weekday "loafing" in Rockville in mid-November. Is there a shopping mall, or points of interest? Fly into Reagan but Rockville's too far from DC for an inexpensive day trip isn't it?

Rockville is a suburb of DC. You could take Metro to downtown in about 30 minutes. Go to www.stationmasters.com for metro map/station info.

There are several metro stations in Rockville, depending on where you're staying. They're all on the red line and it'll take you 40 minutes to get downtown. It's a very easy commute.
As for shopping, if you have a car, Montgomery Mall (Nordstrom's, Hechts, Sears) is nearby in Bethesda. White Flint (Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdales) is on Rockville Pike which is the main artery in Rockville (I think it's technically in North Bethesda). There are also a bunch of strip malls with assorted different stores.
You should be able to do tourist things and shopping, if you want. Have fun.

Definitely go into DC! It'll cost about $2 per person on the metro from Rockville to DC, and it is more exciting than just shopping in a generic mall.
Also, if you go directly from Reagan, the metro to DC takes about 15 minutes, or less.
