RiverWalk Questions again:)

Hi All- My husband and I are off to Texas in 2 weeks- first stop San Antonio. We are using points to stay 3 nights at the Palacio Del Rio before driving to Hill Country and finally Austin. Questions: (1) How long will it take to get a taxi from San Antonio Airport and drive to hotel? (2)I read everyone's comments about the Riverwalk restos...We have 3 dinners to eat there and no car...WHAT ARE YOUR DINNER SUGGESTIONS PLEASE...I was surprised so many people complained about poor service...We live in Boston and just took family to our tourist trap called Fanueil Hall and we had a lovely, cheery waitress at "Cheer's" and last month ate at hot new $$$ Boston place "Sibling Rivalry"and thought waiter was lacking in skill and fun attitude. I guess I thought service would be friendlier in TX than MA went to Tampa last summer and thought servers and sales people were fabulous!) Just looking for decent food and good service..and people watching spots. Thanks for all your help!

We had great meals at Landry's (even though its a chain), Paeseno's (sp?), Rhein Steakhouse and one of the Mexican Rests at El Mercado (can't remember name), there are two both owed by same family. This was about 3 years ago now.

Have fun.

In June, we had two good dinners at Biga on the Banks and Rhine Steak House (which was above the River Walk, outside, and cool).

The best on the Riverwalk I've had is a relatively new restaurant, Pesca's, in the Watermark Hotel. Hip restaurant and excellent food!

We spent an enjoyable couple hours at a wine bar Saturday too. Zinc, street level and I'm not sure how we got there (I'm still very much learning my way around the city). They've got a tapas menu so it'd be light which may be all you want with this heat. It is HOT here...steamy...be prepared!!

Spent four nights at the Palacio Del Rio in April 2005. Taxi from the airport took about 35 minutes because of the time of day; taxi to the airport took much less time.

The restaurants we enjoyed along the Riverwalk were: Rita's on the River, County Line Smokehouse, Cafe Rio and Cafe Ole. I think my favorite was Cafe Ole. Breakfast at Ibizia (Hilton) was good, too. Truthfully -- everything along the Riverwalk looked and smelled good!

Mrs. MileKing and I just returned from an extended weekend in San Antonio. The Little Rhein Steakhouse on the Riverwalk is absolutely excellent; on par with Morton's for fantastic food and great service (as well as prices).

For something a little out of the way and romantic on the Riverwalk, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Delores Del Rio. It's at 106 RiverWalk, out of the touristy bustle of things. They have a great jazz band and the food was excellent. Here's a restaurant profile from CitySearch:

Hope you enjoy your visit. I suggest keeping a bottle of water with you at all times -- as you know, it's gonna be HOT.

You can get a taxi in less than a minute at the airport. The drive time is less than 15 minutes to the River Walk. It will cost about $20.

I lived in SA for many years and frequented the River Walk. I suggest walking along the river and checking out the menu boards along the sidewalk. Its all restaurants and bars for thousands of miles! If you get there well before dinner get on the river boat taxi to scope out the restaurants you might want to check out.

I used to live in San Antonio many years ago (about 10), and my favorite restaurant on the River Walk was the Bayou Restaurant. I never see it mentioned and I wonder if it has closed.

If you are arriving on a weekend, it shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes to get downtown.

I live in the area and so don't eat Mexican food on the river as the best restaurants for that aren't found there. We have always enjoyed good service at Paesano's. In my experience on the riverwalk, "poor service" means everything takes a long time (getting seated, drink order, etc.) as opposed to rude/cold servers. Also, a party of 2 is going to have a much easier time than a party of 10. I wouldn't worry about the service.

I experienced a bad server only one time in all my years living in SA. My then employer had taken me to a restaurant called Mama's after my job interview. It was my first day in SA. In front of about eight people from the company who took me there, the waiter said "We don't call it San Anton" to me in a downgrading voice. He knew I was a northerner. The company president promptly told the server that I never said "San Anton" and we all left. The boss apologized to me for the server who was later fired.

San Antonio has a downtown trolley system with a few different routes. They are actually a bus made to lood like a trolley. Pretty cheap to ride, and several different routes. It took about 15 minutes from Alamo Plaza to Market Square. No car shouldn't be a problem if you are just limiting yourselves to the downtown area. Find info at www.viainfo.net Via is what San Antonio calls it's transit system.
