River Cafe in Brooklyn-Is it worth it?

My husband and I will be in New York City for three nights. We would like to have one special dinner. Do you recommend the River Cafe? If not, is there anywhere else you would recommend? We like all kinds of food.

The view is fantastic, the food quite good and the price reasonable - I think i'ts like $80 prix fixe for dinner. So I wold agree a good choice - unles you're either super trendy or real foodies.

I've never been myself but two of my colleagues went there for dinner last month. One liked it a lot but she is one of those people who never has anything bad to say about anyone. The other person said it was overpriced and the food was mediocre. But he's a whiner.

That said, I would love to hear your report.

I have friends who go every time they're in New York and the RAVE about the place. But oddly enough, they both always say openly "the food's only so-so and it is so overpriced, but it is the best view in New York and we just love it."

IMO, the food at River Cafe is mediocre only when compared to the world-class food available elsewhere in NYC; but compared to the food at my local "fancy" restaurant, it's quite good, and the views are unbeatable. That may help explain its popularity. Personally, I'd be happy to have dinner there again. Make sure to stay until after dark--magical.

A good friend of mine just celebrated a big birthday there last week and raved about it!

I agree with what's been said. If you're a real foodie or used to really fine dining, you might be disappointed, but for most it's a great NY experience.

You don't say what else you'd consider if you don't go to the River Cafe or whether you've been to NYC before. Those things can affect the decision.

Thanks for all of your responses. We've never been to New York before. I don't really have any other restaurants in mind but I think we'll stick with the River Cafe. I will give all the details of our visit when we return. Thanks again.
