Richard - I suggest you check with your service provider - I'm pretty sure Motient has 857/957 and 850/950 service in Maui and Cingular has Honolulu (if you're going to be there). Your service provider might roam onto one of these networks.

Just called Cingular , no service in hawaii except Honolulu. gateway will only hold your messages for 3 days so if you dont get back to Honolulu those messages will fade into , lala land, thanks all

if you don't mind being tethered to a phone wire for your email, try what I'm using. VTech Expresso email appliance. I bought mine at Staples for $30. Yearly service is ~$100, and you can use @yahoo addresses. Unit runs on batteries and is about 4" x 6" X 0.75" ... but of course you need a telephone line, but many airport payphones have them.

Similar, but larger devices are made by VTech and Cidco (the Mailstation)

On the minus side of using the Expresso, the very small keys are a real pain in the *ss to type with, so keeps my replies to a minimum. (remove the x in my eddress to write me)
