Any recommendations for places for breakfast or quick and moderate early dinner before going off to theater? We will be staying at The Franklin on 87th.

Out of curiosity, what theatre are you going to in that neighborhood. If you're talking about going to midtown theatres, it makes a whole lot more sense to eat near them, so you don't have to worry about getting caught in traffic or having a problem making it to the theatre on time.
You're not too far from the Sarabeth's on Madison, near 92nd.

Also, Friday night we are going to take the BAM bus from the Whitney to Brooklyn to see a show at BAM. Anything you would recommend around the Whitney. I know that neighborhood doesn't have lots of restaurants.

I used to live on 90th Street on the East Side. On the corner of 90th and 1st is a cheap, fast diner for breakfast. If you are looking for something more upscale, try The Vinegar Factory on 91st between York and 1st Avenue. It's a pricy food store downstairs and a restaurant upstairs. If you like Italian, there is a moderate-priced restaurant called Arturo's on the corner of 85th and York. It's where locals go for good pasta.
I'd recommend buying a Zagat guide.
