Restaurant + info near 4 E 28th St

My sister and mother in laws won a short stay in NYC and asked me to post a message to get restaurant recommendations near 4 E 28th St. They will be seeing the Rockettes; any other entertainment recommendations will also be appreciated.

Well the are they're in is primarily a business district - without a whole lot going on at night- and not near much during the day. They'll need to use the subway to see most sights. They're right near the 28th St stop for the NRW - but these trains go only downtown and up as fas as 57th. If they want to go further north to any museums they'll have to switch.

And they'll also find many more economical food options in the Village, upper west side or Union Square areas.

If Broadway is still closed they could check out what's on at Lincoln Center - to look at some comedy or jazz clubs at night.

For during the day - don;t know what their interests are - so it's hard to tell what to reco. You could have them look at destinations above and a million post on NYC below.

Sorry - Friend of a Farmer - between 18 and 19th - gets good reviews. Or they can look at menupages.com for Gramercy/Kips Bay - for a listing by cuisine with diner reviews and actual menus.

4 East 28th would be a bit of a hike to Gramercy Park area. Right in the neighborhood, dining choices include:
Les Halles - mid-range french
Tabla - "haute Indian"
Blue Smoke - great barbecue
Sapa - pan-Asian
Hill Country - very casual barbecue
Aspen - small plates, New American

Actually, there are a lot of choices if they're willing to walk a few blocks in any direction; Lizzie makes some good suggestions; here's a few more:

Black Duck - good, satisfying New American food in the Park South Hotel on 28th between Park and Lex.

not to be confused with:
Black PEARL - new seafood place place across the street from Hill Country on 26th between Broadway and 6th.

Country and the Cafe at Country - wonderful upscale food at the Carlton Hotel Madison and 29th Street.

I Trulli - excellent Italian and their next door wine bar - 27th between Lex and Park. NYTraveler's suggestion of menupages is a great source for comparison and exact addresses.

Sorry - I'm a native New Yorker - so to me 10 or 12 blocks is a mild stroll. We routinely do 3/4 miles to walk off Sunday brunch.

The hotel they are staying at is right at 5th Ave and is sort of in the garment district/jewelry area, and not much open in the evenings.

As mentioned in other posts there are lots of restaurants if they are willing to walk just a few blocks.

Little India is on Lex Ave around 28th St, and I would recommend Anna Purna as a good choice.

A block further to 3rd Ave and you have lots of choices up and down the Aveune. Coppola's is very good Italian on 3rd and 27th, there are a couple of good Asian restaurants on 3rd as well, Chinese and a few good Sushi restaurants.

Hope they have a great trip.

For restaurants, menupages.com is a great guide where they can do their own research. They're staying in Murray Hill/Gramercy

Artisanal is a nice French Brasserie in the area with good value prix fixe lunch and dinner.

For other entertainment options, broadwaybox.com has discounts for off Broadway and B'way (if the strike is over). There are also comedy clubs, jazz clubs. NYmag.com (website for NY Magazine) is another good resource for all those things.

Highly recommend Artisanal. Go there for a glass of wine, if nothing else. Huge selection of wines by the glass & possibly the biggest selection of cheese in the city. Their fondue is very good in these cold months. Their brunch is amazing too.

In addition, nobody's mentioned restaurants in Korea town, on 32nd street between 5th & 6th Ave. For Korean bbq, try Won Jo.

On Lex. & 28th, there's a veg. Indian place called Tiffin Walla. No frills restaurant with some of the best home style Indian food. For south Indian food, try Saravanaas on 26th & Lex.

Lizzie's and mp's suggestions are also good ones.

They will be quite near to some destination restaurants -- closest are 11 Madison Park and Tabla, both at about 26th Street and Madison Avenue.

Tabla, which is an Indian-based fusion restaurant, has a bread bar downstairs where you don't make reservations and the food an atmosphere are very nice.

At regular Tabla or 11 Madison I'd make a reservation unless they 'd like to eat before 7 or after 10.
