Staying East 28th NYC - are there good restaurants in walking distance?

We are visiting NYC next weekend and plan to stay at Park South Hotel on East 28th - good rate on internet, looks like a really nice hotel.

Our question is whether this is a sensible area to stay. We like the idea of staying somewhere that may be reasonably quiet at night (jet lag will be enough to contend with, without added noise), but want to be able to walk to local restaurants for breakfast and possibly dinner if we're too tired to go out again. Can you offer advice...and also any real favourite 'local' restaurants/delis in the area. Murray Hill doesn't feature heavily in any of our guide books.

Your very close to the Gramercy Park/FlatIron district (20s around 5th to Park Ave So.) and I'm sure there are several restaurants in your guidebook for that area. My personal fave neighborhood restaurant/bar is the Silver Swan (20th btwn Broadway and Park Ave So.) The food (German) is great and the owners/staff/regulars are very friendly. My friends and I usually end up eating our meals at the bar or at the tables outside.

There are supposed to be some very good Indian restaurants on Lexington in the 20s/30s but I've never been. A friend just said she had a great meal at AnnaPurna (Spelling?)

Best bet- Check out the message boards at Chowhound.com and have a great trip.

Oh about the hotel area...I don't recall that hotel specifically but the area is nice, quiet and pretty residential. Best thing is that you are pretty centrally located to walk pretty much anywhere and there are a ton of restaurants/delis around.

Some local restaurants are Les Halles, Houstons, on Park. Tabla and 11 Madison, two Danny Meyer restaurants on Madison Sq. Park.
Nearby on Third Ave are a bunch of good ethnic restaurants including Turkish Kitchen, Vatan (Indian), l'Anaam (Vietnamese, Bamiyan (Afghan).
