You might want to check the many threads on this board re NYC restaurants or at least repost with a title that makes sense. Check other titles for examples. Never heard of somebody worrying about where they will eat 9 months out before.

If you want a special "NY-y" place the rivercafe.com has great views and very good food and service. It's not the best food you'll find in NYC but the overall "package" is good. Bateauxnewyork.com dinner is also very nice. I'd guess booking 2-6 wks. in advance should be fine unless you're picking a holiday (don't know when Easter is next year).

If you want just basic steak in a nice setting, the Strip House is a good option. If none of these appeal to you, post back with budget and more details.

If you go to menupages.com you can see diner reviews and actual menus -with prices - of the restaurants discussed.

Agee that the River Cafe is good for special ocasions - wonderful view of the city skyline across the river. Do book a couple of weeks in adavance nd check out their web page since dinners are typically prix fixe.

I know you didn't ask for French food but La Grenouille is a perfect place for a special occasion.
