Rental car on Kauai with Alamo

I paid $594 after taxes and fees but before insurance. Is that an ok price for a 4 door full size. I guess I am worried about hidden charges. This is what we paid for an SUV another year but same month. Anybody every use Alamo in Kauai care to comment?

I have a Kauai Alamo reservation for 11 days in Sept for an SUV.

It came up to be $505 w/ taxes and additional driver, no insurance ($38/day).

I used rate code 6T on Alamo's site and am a QuickSilver member.

Thanks Dan I will look into that. Any cost to becoming a quick silver member I think that give you airport pick up as opposed to that minibus

Daniel if you got an SUV for $594 for 15 days that's $39.60 per day. Dan B got 11 days at $505 which is $45.90 per day. You're getting a better deal.

You can't compare an SUV to a full size car. SUV's usually rent for a lot more. I would book it but keep checking for lower rates.

oops, sorry. Thought they both were getting SUVs. Daniel, you got a bunch of people? If not, why not get a convertible?

we have three people and driver thinks when we are not getting wet from frequent showers we will be getting sunburned.

I guess I want the back seat person to be comfortable and I think it is something of a squeese for two weeks in the back seat of convertible, no? Person is a 9 year old child but It just does not look as comfortable as a regular full size.

ok here's the scoop on the convertible: The top is very easy to deal with. Unlatch at the sun visor and hit the button and it goes down. Hit the button and latch and it's up. We never got wet. We never got sunburned. Used hats and sunscreen. 9 yo, gee how big. Should be enough room and what 9 yo wouldn't want to be in a convertible? I remember the time before last seeing all these people in convertibles and we were in our 4 door. Boy was I jeleous. They were everywhere looking so cool and having a great time! This last time we got a convertible and we were cool and having a great time!
You'll have a great time whatever you choose!

I don't mean to rain on your parade but I live here....why would you pay so much for an SUV?? Just rent a car which can hold 4 people and your luggage for 1/2 the price you're looking at! Have you checked our gas prices lately...substantially more than the mainland. NO NEED FOR A BIG SUV. Tim

Daniel,

I just returned from my honeymoon on Kauai on June 28th. We rented a car with Alamo through an AA Vacations package (I don't know the cost breakdown off hand). I had reserved a compact car knowing that I could always upgrade when I got to the ticket counter if need be. They tried to push the Jeeps or Convertibles at us. They were out of compacts and put us in a full size at no charge. Alamo is very small on Kauai and has a very limited number of cars. We had to wait about 20 minutes for someone to return the car and for them to wash it.

Just a little food for thought.

Thing is in Summer you lucky if you are not waiting on a rental line for 20 minutes. Last summer we waited in Honolulu airport for a pick up from National for 40 minutes. I think it was national but I can't remember. It was certainly 40 minutes or longer with two phone calls into the desk. When we got to the counter there were no lines so I did not understand the delay.

Have you ever been stuck without a car rental from a dealer? I have never had this problem on any island. I have never been forced to take a car I did not like. So I would not worry about availabilty when I am going if they have assured me before hand.

thanks for the feedback Tim but I think for the savings I can deal with the story you are talking about. Will call a head though. We are arriving mid day with a plane from SFO so I suspect there will be some kind of car rental lines. Now were they trying to give you a convertible at a compact price?

We arrived at Alamo at about 2:30 in afternoon on Saturday June 22nd, on an inter-island flight. It seemed to be a very busy travel day on the Islands. They were not offering a convertible at a compact price. They were trying to get me to pay more for this, as they were out of compacts.

Yeah Tim I just think that happens some times and especially on a Saturday with any of the agencies. I have waited on enormous lines after being shuttled from a pick up spot. Not all the time but I can recall experiences as you had. At that time I did not think of it because I was just coming for a weekend getaway while living on Oahu.

I just think I would be more upset if I was force to accept a smoker's car, almost happened last summer on Oahu after that 40 minute wait. It was 40 minutes at the curb pick up the hot and sticky HNL airport and we had 3 kids with us. We got out of the smokers car but some poor sucker just after us had to take it,last van on the lot. I also remember having to return a defaulty car on Kauai another year just minutes after we left the lot. Again all different agencies.
