PLEASE don't beat me up, but my husband just can't get used to chicory coffee and wants plain old Maxwell House (or whatever) with his beignets. Where is the closest place to get take out so we can successfully have breakfast without grumblings? Thanks!

Krispy Kreme donut shop has a cafe very near Cafe DuMonde--on the other side of the large staircase across from Jackson Square (K.K. on one side, Cafe D.M. on the other) No beignets, however, but regular coffee and Kripsy Kreme Donuts. If you cross Decatur (at Cafe DuMonde) and walk toward the Catheral, you'll come across LaMadeline. French and American coffee and good breakfast. If you're set on coffee and beignets, get the beignets at C.D.M., the coffee somewhere else, and have a picnic on the boardwalk by the Mississippi River.

I also like LaMadeline. We always make a point to go there when in New Orleans. Good pastries. Good place for an afternoon snack and tired foot rest. It's on Jackson Square close to the cathedral. Have fun.

If you are staying in the "eastern" Quarter, try Croissant d'Or. Great coffee and superb pastries. I believe it's on Ursulines street, maybe 3 blocks from Cafe Du Monde.

We're going to stay at the Inn on Bourbon (corner of Toulouse and Bourbon) so I'm thinking the Krispy Kreme would be the closest. Is it located near the Hard Rock Cafe?

Hey cc, the Krispy Kreme is next door to the old Planet Hollywood. I think it was called "Cafe Beignet" at one time. It's only 100 yards or so to Cafe DuMonde.

My favourite coffeehouse in the Quarter is CC's on Royal & St Philip.

I can't get used to chicory coffee either. The first time I tried it I must have put 1/4 cup of sugar in it trying to get the bitter taste out. After that, I started having my beignets with chocolate milk.

The "acquired taste" of chicory was definitely slow-in-coming for me, too. I love it now, though.

My Mom is from N.O. and loves chickory coffee, but I hate it.... we drink what I like because I make the coffee... hahahahahaha

Thanks all! Personally I like the iced coffee at Cafe DuMonde, but I can't convince the hubby to try it. "I want REGULAR coffee" is the rebuttal of choice.

Dan - you'll like this one. There's a statue of a man sitting on the back wall between the Cafe and French Market. We were having breakfast one morning and had too much (hummmm, hard to imagine) so my husband was going to give the leftovers to the "poor guy" sitting there. I let him get clear up to it before laughing - That'll teach him not to wear his glasses!

I received my December copy of Travel + Leisure magazine yesterday. Magnolia Mansion (garden district), La Maison Marigny (Faubourg Marigny) and Maison Perrier (Uptown) were their choices for cool places to stay.
