Regional Recipes for Tailgate Party

Okay, I know this is a stretch on a travel board, but these don't necessarily have to be tailgate food, but any easy to eat food that you may take traveling on a picnic or bike ride, or to keep in your hotel room.

I have been invited to my first tailgate party. It is during the day in the middle of August. About 10 people from the UK & it is a soccer game at Giants Stadium in NJ.

Any suggestions on what to contribute?

Break out the charcoal -- sausage, peppers & onions. Cook up the peppers & onions in an aluminum pan, cook the sausage, and pour on the grey poupon.

Sausage balls. Combine spicey Jimmy Dean sausage with Bisquik, and grated sharp cheddar cheese. The recipe is on the back of the bisquik box or Jimmy Dean sausage sleeve (sorry but I only make them every couple of years but someone always brings them).

Spinache dip.

Combine 2 cups sour cream, 1 cup mayonaise, one envelope Onion Soup Mix, One envelope Vegtable Soup Mix. Refrigerate.

Completely dry 2 8oz packages chopped spinache and mix into above mix. Add one small can chopped water chesnuts.

Serve in either hollowed out bread or bowl with favorite chips.

Mix salted peanuts and plain M&Ms in a bowl.

Pork or beef BBQ.

Fried Chicken (buy it and save yourself the hassle).

Bloody Marys.

Mix 1/2 Major Peters BM Mix, 1/4 Clamato Juice, 1/4 Vodka, Tablespoon horseradish, fresh ground black pepper. Mix well garnish with celery.

Stop and get some Italian subs and salads. If there will be grill, do hamburgers and hotdogs. Potato chips and dip; cheese and crackers would finish it off.

Thank you. Good stuff so far. I am trying to keep it simple. I have no idea if there is a grill, I just want things that are easy to transport from NYC to NJ. Not to heavy (thus no beverages). Will let someone who is bringing a car handle all of that. I want to bring some sort of picky food--appetizers or maybe I should just bring cookies and be done with it. Nah, I have to be able to show-off a little!

I've been to football tailgates where we bring our sterling silver and put on the ritz. The corporate parties we attend usually rent an RV and set it up for an all-day party. If you will just be in the stadium parking lot, you will need folding chairs and large coolers.
Gotravel's food suggestions can't be beat. Each stadium has different alcohol policies, so check in advance.

Brats are good! What, no beer? No Bloody Mary's? No alcohol? (It's allowed in the Meadowlands.) Is this going to be a "ladies" tailgate party? How does "bugs" feel about this?

If you want easily transportable, buy fried chicken the night before and refridgerate. Take with you in tupperware container.

Mix Bloody Mary Mix night before and put in large cooler thermos.

Take the peanuts and M&Ms with you and dump in bowl at game.

Those are my easy tailgate not showing up empty handed tricks.

If you can keep them cooled, Tortilla Roll-ups are good and will be eaten very quickly.

Tortilla Roll-ups
2 - 8 oz. pkgs cream cheese, softened
1 pkg Hidden Valley Ranch dry dressing
2 chives
Mix those first three together -- and spread on 4 large tortillas.
Drain and spread on top: pimentos, green chiles, sliced black olives.

Roll up tortillas, cover and refrigerate overnight; cut into small slices. Because the ends get a little messy, the preparer will have to (sacrifce!) eat the ends before anyone else sees them!

Budman: Being from the brat capital of the world, I just assumed beer was included!!! It wouldn't be a tailgate without it.

Hi, I am sure there will be alcohol, these ARE Brits and it is soccer! Just not sure about the grill. I like the fried chicken idea.

bugswife, can you call somewhere like Sylvia's (soul food or diner) and see what they charge? It shouldn't be too expensive ToGo.

There isn't by chance a Bojangles or Church's Fried Chicken in the Big Apple is there?

Don't know about Bojangles or Churches. I was going to call a place in my neighborhood and see what they can do for me. Shouldn't be too much for 10 people.

Keep the ideas coming!

Olive spread: Soften two 8-oz. packages of cream cheese and mix with sliced WELL-DRAINED green pimento-stuffed olives and pitted black olives.
Finely chop several garlic cloves and add, along with a few drops of Tabasco and Worchestershire.. Pack it in a bowl or mold and refrigerate several hours or overnight. Amount of garlic depends on your taste!
As for the amount of olives, we usually use a can of pitted black olives, then fill the can with the green olives. We slice them in the food processor (without the blaade in the bottom.)

Serve with crackers.
