The Salt River Canyon is really beautiful. I haven't been there in a couple of years though. I believe there might have been wild fires in the mountains there last year. My advice for anyone who wants to tour around Arizona is call the State Forestry Dept.We had a lot of fires last year and this year. Not sure what areas have been burned or saved.

Someone mentioned receiving a "pass" from the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak to the Pointe at South Mountain. They are no longer "sister properties" as Hilton sold the South Mountain property. Therefore, they have no reciprocity agreement. The Squaw Peak property has a "lazy river," which is kind of fun and a nice pool area for children. You may, however, want to check out WaterWorld (around 43rd Avenue just South of the 101 Freeway). It's a fun way to spend the day if you run out of things to do. Also, consider Wildlife World Zoo in the West valley. It's a wonderful zoo. However, now that I think about, it will be miserably hot there at the end of August. A trip to Sedona would be fun, but also very HOT. It will be in the 90's in August. If you do go, try to go in the morning and arrange a Pink Jeep Tour. It will be the highlight of your trip to Arizona. I agree with the above posters. Avoid Nogales... dirty... not a place for young girls.

Hey, thanks for all the great information! We'll definitely spend a day in Sedona and probably check out Saguaro NP. It sounds like a trip to Salt River Valley might be good too. I'm looking at a map - it looks like that's Highway 88, the same one that goes to Lost Dutchman Mine SP. Is that right?

As far as heat goes, we're coming from Seattle, so it's a change of pace for us and we don't mind it. We did a driving trip to the southwest a couple of years ago in August and had a great time. How hot it gets will just dictate how far we stray from the pool!

There are saguaro cacti all around the desert in Arizona, so I don't see the big attraction in Saguaro NP. If you are going to go to Tucson for a day trip, I would make it a very long day trip and go all the way to Bisbee and see the Copper QUeen (underground) Mine, then stop at Tombstone (for 1/2 hour or so). Stopping at Karchner Caverns would be good, but I doubt you could get reservations this close to your trip.
