Recommend Alexandria, is it a 'must see'? What to do, see, where to eat etc.

A nice "alternative" breakfast place is Kramer Books in Dupont Circle...very funky. Kramers also have live music some evenings.

For Irish pub music in Alexandria, you have your choice of Murphy's or Pat Troy's. I personally prefer Ireland's Four Fields (formerly known as Ireland's Four Provinces or "The 4 P's") in Cleveland Park.
It might be a chain, but I always like Le Madeleine in Georgetown for breakfast. For a REALLY quick breakfast in Georgetown, I like the Bagelry.
One breakfast place I am dying to try (homemade donuts! grits!) is Colorado Kitchen, 5515 Colorado Ave, NW.
Not sure about a restaurant with violins in Georgetown...probably not Paolo's or Cafe Milan. Filomena's maybe? Consequently, I like Sunday brunch at Filomena's, but it's pretty heavy.

>>the King Street metro in Alexandria would require you to catch a bus to Old Town (or a long walk). <<
I disagree with this. The King Street Metro is at the very top of Old Town proper. It's about a ten minute walk to the center axis of Old Town, King and Washington Streets and then another ten mintues walk to the bottom of King Street, the Potomac River. The most touristed bits are in the latter half of the walk but there are plenty of antique places, one-off shops and restaurants in between the metro and Wash Street.
Or, if you want to soak up the architectural atmosphere, when you leave the metro walk a couple of blocks down King, then turn right for a block to Prince Street. Continue down Prince until the river and you will get your fill of restored 18th and 19th century homes.
