Really nice boutique-type hotel in Maui?

Rex,
You've got to remember that it's a small hotel. You're not going to find many people that have stayed there - not with so few units.
Still, I wish you luck on finding other folks who have stayed there.
If not, and you're still uncomfortable with your choice, go ahead and look for something else. Better to do that than spend the next few months worrying that you've booked a dump.

Rex,
I am totally fine with you being suspicious about me. I'm equally curious on why you took a post from last February to question my motives, rather than start a thread of your own. The written word comes across slightly insulting. Ok, my integrity was more than slightly attacked. Any reason to speak about me in the third person? Curious... I knew my ears were burning.......

Ken - doh! You're right, it's right there! IMHO, that is not a very nice location. I have only been to Maui once, but I hated Kihei. The beach, from just south of Menehune Shores and continuing north, is just not very nice. South Kihei Road is a busy street and I see it runs between Aloha Pualani and the ocean. $265 a night to look out over a busy road does not sound like a good deal to me. Kihei itself is just one long strip mall with lots of traffic. If I ever go back to Maui (which I admit I probably will not) I'd opt for Wailea. The beaches there are beautiful and it has been much more thoughtfully developed.

You're right. The written word fails on many posts here. And i appreciate your writing me privately. I want to go back to my only reason to be perplexed. Why no bookings for a time of year that has every property heavily booked, and at premium rates?
There is a real estate listing that the property is for sale - - but I don't want to imply that actually means anything suspicious. It just made me have a chill run up my spine, when I read the comment on virtual tourist that the owners had made "good use of their advertising agency" ("boutique hotel" is a good buzzword to use, since Maui is pretty well known for having none.
Do you think that the characterization on virtual tourist of "not really having an ocean view" is accurate? Not that their view makes or breaks a stay there.
As I said, since you wrote to me, I will write back.
But the entire fodors community benefits from the maximum possible sharing of information, or interest to all.

I am sure that Sheri Withers the owner would be happy to reassure you and any interested in this property. Yes, she put it up for sale over a year ago and has recently cut the price. I believe that the vacancy is due to the fact that she really does not advertise the property, it is by word of mouth. She enjoys the place she built and seemingly does not need to keep it full. She does, or did live on premisis in the 6th unit. It,is truly a remarkable place, and we, haven stayed at the Grand Resorts of Maui, Lanai and Kauai, actually love Kihei and it's down home feel. Aloha Pualani is an oasis, which is wonderful to wake up to , spend some time at the pool, go out to explore and return to grill a wonderful dinner if you are so inclined , in a cryfree, diaper free zone.

While I will continue to seek more information about Aloha Pualani - - see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473458 for example...
I want to acknowledge a LOT of generous and helpful information from gyppielou - - not the least of which was retrieving and topping this (almost) two year-old wonderful trip report...
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=34464111
..and take note that the Aloha Pualani was quite underbooked at Christmas 2003 - - and g'lou was apparently the beneficiary of that! For what it's worth, they're solidly booked Dec 24-30 for THIS Christmas.
And I want to publicly apologize for any hint of maligning her integrity, in her various and enthusiastic remarks about the AP (those of you who know me from the Europe forum, know that I have made numerous similar posts about places I love in Europe also!)
I look forward to being able to look back and laugh at the "buzz" I have generated over this decision.
Who's to say it won't all be booked tomorrow!? At least I got my pick of rooms (and yes, we did choose the most expensive - - the honeymoon suite - - since it was available).

SInce you asked--Menehune Shores and Aloha Pualani are .43 mile apart along S. Kihei Rd, according to Mapquest.
GREAT advice from, Ken. Rex, the info is here for you, given in a spirit of sharing knowledge and experience--take it or leave it.
ONly a 36 hour stay in Maui?? RELAX!
I still don't get why you would not want to stay in a well-located, reasonabley priced, huge condo, sipping drinks on a lanai looking directly West as the sun sets, with nothing betgeeen you and incredible ocean and island (Lanai and Molokai) views except a stretch of beach. Or check out www.hololani.com for another view of the beach there in Kahana town (right next to Royal Kahana)--although they too have a minimum # nights.
Anyway, good luck whatever you choose. You'll be on Maui--ENJOY!

A few days to reflect over our choices is easing me ito believing that Aloha Pualani is the best match for what we ae seeking, thohg ?i still have not ruled out a place like WaiOla, and just not worry about being on the beach (its more or less "in town", in Lahaina). The issue is little by little coming down to what total budget to allocate to this trip. At one level, it's a "free trip" (FF award seats and employer picking up some of the larger expenses like the conference itself, and four nights at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island) - - but that has led to the thinking that... well, out of our own pockets, we could spend this or that... on whatever (mostly recreational) and of course, that will include meals on Maui... so, while on one hand, I feel like this IS our 30th anniversary... why spare any expense? On th othr hand, I am always driven to "play the (value) game".
My wife has said clearly "no" to the two different places for the two Maui nights (this is one strength of our marriag - - she grounds my nuttiest ideas - - except for the ones I hold most passionately, and that usually works out, too).
So for now, I am generally putting Villag by the Sea and Outrigger (Royal Kahana) in the same boat - - decent, btu second tier for us, I think. Still haven't ruled out some places that say "no" to two night stay, though at least one said dcheck back in November; they might release some rooms from that requirement.
It's been interesting to see how much some people hold to their likes or dislikes rather stridently (including the authors of the Blue Bibles). Oddly, it has felt like there is a bit of a "competition" - - "Believe Me! Believe Me! I can steer you the best!"
?I have a feeling I am wrestling between (though not stressing over) choices of good, better and better still. There are probably no "bad", and maybe... no "best".
