Rainy Days in New Jersey

I am planning a trip to NJ in August, mainly to hang out at the beach and the towns along the shore. Unfortunately I hear that August is one of the rainiest months there, so my question is: Is there anything to do there when it's raining? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Where are you staying? Are you bringing kids?

Movies, bowling, shopping are some ideas that come to mind.

Sorry, I didn't give a lot of details. No kids, we're just two guys in our early-mid 30's. I'm not sure yet where we're staying, probably somewhere near Atlantic City.

August? Hottest-yes. Rainiest-no. Of course you can run into rain anytime.

Atlantic City, naturally casinos come to mind. Rainy days are also a good time to have a special indoor lunch.

Depending how far you want to drive, aquarium in Camden may work. Haven't been there so don't know if much is outside.

I looked up the aquarium and apparently it's just had a major renovation. Driving there is no problem; NJ is pretty small. That could be a good rainy day option. Thanks!

Yeah, casinos too, of course!

I have lived in NJ most of life and would not say that it rains in August any more/less than any other month. I will point out that it is very humid and hot. If you go to AC there is a lot to do in the casinos if it rains, even if you are not a gambler. They have shows and lots of buffets. Pick up a local paper, esp Sunday, if possible, and you will find tons of coupons.

Other shore towns offer movies, malls, bowling and other typical indoor activies.

The state's official website is www.state.nj.us and has a portal for vacationing. It is divided by the regions and the shore is one region.

The aquarium has just been renovated, but the Camden waterfront is 1 1/2 to 2 hours from AC and at least an hour from most of the major seashore areas. Traffic is horendous, so keep that in mind. The Parkway is a parking lot Friday afternoon going south and Sunday afternoon going north. MOst of the shoretowns have one lane main roads and get congested very quickly and early in the day.

I am sure that you will find plenty to do. The Jersey shore is a popular destination for both out of staters and locals.

Have fun and enjoy.

The aquarium is probably not a great choice... a solid 1 1/2 hours from AC (as for NJ being small... east to west it's a good 1 1/2 hours in most parts and from Cape May (south east) to High Point (north west), you're in for a good 3 1/2 hours).

Casinos would definitely top the list... not just gambling, there are some good shows, food, etc.
