Radio city Xmas spectacular

being from NYC, I always thought that the Radio City Xmas show was commercial, overpriced and frankly always opted for Broadway instead. However, now that I am seeing discount tickets for $49.00 I am reconsidering. Is it really very commercial, is it all dancing girls?? Thanks for your opinions.

It is fabulous and worth every penny.

I've seen it countless times and every single time it takes me right back to being a five year old little girl.

No, it isn't all dancing girls.

Also, Radio City Music Hall is an Art Deco masterpiece in itself.

I have seen it three times in my life, age 11, then in my 20s and then in my 30s.

I enjoyed it the first time and was bored the other two times.

I know everyone is different & tastes and interests vary among all of us but for me it was a lot of candy for the eyes but nothing cerebral...nothing that engaged me.

I dont really like going to the circus either.

We loved it (about 10 years ago) except for one particular "act" that was particularly religious in nature (yeah, I know it's the "Christmas" spectacular, but this was over the line IMHO).

It's a one-of-a-kind experience. Where else are you going to see ice skaters, tap dancers accompanied by an orchestra, live animals, and Santa Claus? Is it commercial? Absolutely, but then so is a Broadway musical.

BTW, the Rockettes are amazing dancers, and as GoTravel points out, the building is a treasure.

You must see the Rockettes at least once in a lifetime.

It might be worth it if you have never been inside the MUsic Hall (although I do believe they do tours of the building). As for the show, IMHO it is nothing special and fairly boring. We always do the Nutcracker at the holidays instead.

(Caveat: I'm a native New Yorker and have been to the Music Hall dozens of times since I was a small child - including many times when it was movies only - no stage show. Have been unimpressed with the latter since an easter show when I was about 10 - a kick line of Rockettes pushing a cardboard bluebird across the stage was a highlight.)

I have not been in there a thousand years but we had a pool, which animal would soil the stage first. Smart money was on the elephant. I am not sure if there is still an elephant in the show, if not put your money on the camel.

I'm sorry but I'm a native New Yorker too and back when I was a kid you had to wait in hours long lines to get in. To this day I get chills when I see the Rockettes all do that high kick.

We didn't think we would be 'in to' the Radio Xmas show but when we had the chance to get half price when we visited NYC last year tickets we took a chance and I have to say that, if / when we are ever in NYC again over the Christmas period we will not miss seeing the show! It was a very 'feel good' type of show and really got you into the spirit of things. IMHO, everyone should go to see it at least once!

I love it! I've seen it in NY several times and last year when it came to Toronto, I took my 5-year-old niece to see it and she was thrilled. The NY version is bigger and better, I think, but as she had no basis of comparison she was delighted (and delightful).

hdm--I saw it in NYC first, then a few years later saw it in Seattle. It was good, but obviously didn't have quite the same effect. There is just something about the performance in RCMH.

Well, RCMH is so beautiful just on it's own. I took SO to see the Christmas Spectacular in NY last December partially because he'd never been in the building. The theatre in Toronto didn't have enough room for the Central Park ice rink or some of the special effects. Still, it was better than not taking her at all. I can't wait till she's old enough for me to take her to NY!

I haven't been lucky enough to see this show yet, but as has been said earlier, the building itself is fantastic. I highly recommend the guided tour during the daytime to anyone visting the area. It's a fantastic building.

If all you want to see is the Rockettes they always perform in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

I think there are camels. I saw 3 of them Friday outside RCMH. No wise men though. I heard Santa does the hip gyration thing.
