There have been numerous reports here of people who have stayed there and were happy with it. It is indeed a bargain and a good deal. Beware that nearly every post about them starts off with comments like "well, of course it isn't the Ritz" or "don't expect fancy". I once looked at them and passed (looking for a longer stay in the future). They looked like very cheaply done college rooming houses furnished with Goodwill furniture. If you are comfortable with that kind of look and decor, you will get a lot for your money here. If you want even a level of decor found in a Super 8 motel (cheap but realatively new and thought out) then you need to keep looking.

When are you planning to be there? We are leaving in 3 weeks for a 4 night stay in a studio at $139.00 per night. A friend has been to NYC 12 times and only stays there. I'll let you know when we return. I don't need fancy as I don't intend to be in the room too often. I'd rather spend the saved money elsewhere.

I have stayed at Radio City 5 times and have reservations again in June. It is basic, clean, and has a friendly desk staff. Bathrooms are NOT big and in some rooms the bath can be categorized as downright tiny, there are plenty of clean towels, soaps, shampoos etc., they also provide hairdryers. Each room has a kitchenette with small table and chairs, stove, fridge, coffee maker, coffee, tea and sink area (these are BASIC appliances, not state-of-the-art) can't attest to how well they work as I do not cook in the room. Each room I have stayed in has had a "working" window in both the main area and the bathroom. Carpets have been clean on each of my stays, and are brand new (2005) on some floors. Furnishings are fine, they are just very simple and basic, things were not beatup or shabby in any of the rooms we stayed in. Elevators are not lightening fast as some people on this forum seem to demand - if you don't want to wait, the open stairwell is well lit, freshly painted, and clean - use that instead. The hotel is conveniently located, close to theaters and the restaurant next door is very good. There is also a small public space 2 doors down with a waterfall and another across the street - both have tables and chairs and are a great place to take your coffee or have a take-out picnic.

If you are a high maintenance guest, need a mint on the pillow, room to entertain 30 of your closest friends, room service or a doorman, this is not the hotel for you; think European tourist class hotel. Personally, it's my first choice unless I can score a 4* Priceline hotel for less than RCA, which is becoming more difficult to do especially in the Spring & Fall. There is nothing wrong with staying here, especially if you are on a budget. If you require more from a hotel and you are comfortable spending more there are certainly other hotels to book.

I hesitate to recommend it any more only because it's popularity has caught on and the rates for 2006 have risen as a result (although is still one of the best hotel bargains in NYC). I preferred it when it was a "secret" LOL. You need to book early as the hotel sells quickly.

Enjoy NYC.

Hi dagl, the hotel is certainly acceptable, but I would not put it into the 'special' category.

Perhaps you could start a thread with a title like: "Suggestions for great NYC hotel stay w/ my 11 yr old" (or something like that) you will get some very helpful comments from other parents who might have found a hotel that their children especially liked, or that did something extra for the kids.

Have fun planning your trip, I look forward to hearing more about it!

But if you do that post, please include a price point you're comfortable with. Othewise the answers may be meaningless.
