Quirky places to stay please
My partner & I are fly driving the coast between San Diego & San Fran in October. We intend fitting in Yosemite overnight with a few days each in SD & SF. What we would like is to find some budget B&B/motels between these areas to stay in. Also a romantic, central, mid price hotel in SD & SF to stay in. Any recommendations. Thanks for your help, I have found this site really valuable

I'm going to ignore (somewhat) your text and concentrate on the "quirky" part: if you want to stay in the place (IMO) that when you look up the word "quirky" there is a picture of it...

Here's one for you-
About halfway between SF and Santa Cruz is Pigeon Point Light House Hostel. Great tidal pools to explore in an old still used lighthouse complex.
Thet used to have an oceanside hot tub for rent- soak while being misted with salt spray from the breakers.
The rooms are very simple as one would expect at an AYH
