We posted this request for info in January and want to make sure that the info is still current. We land at JFK on 6 am on Wed May 27. Our flight to Moscow on the same airline leaves at 2:20 pm the same day. We want to make a run into the city (midtown) and be back in time to catch that flight. No luggage involved. Our heroes Doug, and ellenm had great suggestions. We are trying to decide between the LIRR to Penn Station and the E train to 53rd street to stroll the area between Grand Central and South Central Park. Which stop on each route would be the best to walk that area? We want to take the quickest route obviously. It looks like the LIRR is faster but will it get us where we need to be? Lastly, we want to be at JFK for our 2:20 flight. What time should be leave the city and which train, (E) or LIRR, would you suggest at that time of day? Also does anyone have a favorite deli in that area?

For a flight to Moscow you need to check with your airline - but they may want you at the airport 3 hours before flight time. So for a 2:20 flight leave the city by 1:20 - and I would do LIRR to the Airtrain as faster.
Think this is faster each way - although once you get to Penn Station you will need to grab a subway - just take the 1 train to Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park).

Thank you all for your help. We were hell bent on going to Manhattan because our friends had never been there. Came to our senses and are now going to Rockaway Beach Queens to walk around a bit. Any ideas on a place to eat on a Wed. morning and also how long to get there on Air train and subway. Thank you.

If this is a connecting flight on the same airline as you state, then the info about the airline wanting you at the airport 3hr ahead is completely wrong. You will be checked in to Moscow already. You just need to make sure you are at the departure gate in time. That would give you 1.5 to 2 hrs more to play.
