We'll be meeting some friends at the Met Sunday morning, and will be staing in Ridgewood, N.J.

I always hear parking on a Sunday in NYC is free and not bad at all ... so we figured it'd give us a bit more flexibility and be cheaper than taking NJT in.

Anyway, you guys think there will be available spots Sunday near the Met, and if so, where should we look/how is the best to get there?

You are refering to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and not the Metropolitan Opera correct?

I would count on a long walk in the wet, cold, and windy weather.

The Met has a large parking garage and you can get a slight discount by having your ticket validated at the admissions desks.
Take the Lincoln tunnel and go up 10th Ave. Turn right at the Lincoln Center Parking and take that street (I think it is 65th) all the way through Central Park to 5th Ave. Turn right again and you're at the Met

Thanks for the info - we likely will take the Main/Berger from Ridgewood into Penn Station (although it requires some kind of transfer at Secaucus Junction) and on up to the Met via cab most likely.

After I posted it occured to me that you probably would not be heading to the Metropolitan Opera House.

SusieQQ, I hope no one follows your directions for getting to the Metropolitan Museum. If you go through Central Park at 65th Street and turn right on Fifth Avenue, you'll be going away from the museum, since it's located on Fifth Avenue in the 80s!!!
Since Fifth Avenue is one way going sounth, you'll have to go through Central Park in the 90s and then take a right on Fifth Avenue!
A general observation about the free parking meter spaces on Sundays: It's not that easy to find free spaces, as people tend to leave their cars in these spots on Saturday night! We had hellish time finding a space in the West 80s last Sunday. We finally did, but it wasn't easy.

If you do decide to drive, SusieQQ's directions are not correct. Drive uptown on 8th ave. At Columbus Circle (59 st) where the statue is and the roundabout, take the turn for Central Park west (so the park is on your right hand side) and continue uptown to 86 st. Make a right turn into the park and drive through the park. You will exit at 84 st and Fifth Ave. The Museum is right there. Make a right turn onto Fifth Ave. and you'll see the entrance to the museum parking garage on your right down a block or 2. If you were to get there very early, there is sometimes parking on the left side of Fifth Ave. or on one of the side streets b/w Fifth & Madison.

You might check the museum's website for info on parking, I'm not sure the parking is open to the public after 9/11, but again that could have changed. There will probably be some parking north of the Met on 5th AVe so you will probably find yourselves driving around a bit to find a spot. Also on Sunday now you no longer have to feed the meters. That started a couple of weeks ago.

The parking at the Met is open to the general public.....It's convenient, but expensive.
