Purchasing inter-island coupons while in Kauai

Just made an inter-island flight reservation with the intention of purchasing my flight coupon at the airport in Honolulu or Lihue. Very disturbing to know that the ATM machines may be empty or may issue non-refundable expired tickets. I know I can fedx the tickets here to the mainland, but then it's not the big bargain I was hoping for.

About these check cashing places that offer the coupons, where might I find them? Thanks
a lot for the input.

Cathy,

I just talked with Hawaiian Airlines last week, and they told me that, if the ATM machine is out of tickets, they will sell you one at the counter for the same price - that is the policy right now. You might want to call them and verify for yourself.

I saw your question about The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook; can be bought in (or ordered at) any major bookstore, or go to "wizardpub.com" to order. I believe it's about $20, and well worth it.

Cathy,

OOPS! Correction to above: The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook is priced at $13.95, not $20. Sorry!

On Kauai, be sure to eat at Cafe Coco in Kapaa! Have a great time!

i know these folks at Hawaiian air, and to tell them that the ATM machine was out of coupons is well...asking for a huge problem. regardless of what they may have said on the phone, it will require a supervisor's approval..station managers approval and 45 minutes later you may get refused. i have been there and done that! the ATM people are NOT Hawaiian Air people, and the airline is perfectly within their right to deny you, since they have no obligation to accomodate you in this instance. i would'nt even try to go that road again. it took me an act of god (and multiple reports to BBB to get my expired ATM purchased fixed. airline points finger at ATM...ATM points finger at airline. passenger caught in middle.

Tiare, Aren't you the lady who has the business selling interisland coupons, for about $58.00 each? I'm sure that I visited your website! I have never had a problem with Hawaiian Airlines, in any way, over many trips!

No!!! I do NOT have a web site that sells coupons! I do have a NON-COMMERCIAL web site with many articles on travel tips and information about visitng Hawaii including several on coupons and inter-island travel at Suite101.com. The web site is: http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/hawaii. I also write Hawaii articles for several other large travel web sites including America Online. You probably have seen my articles on other commercial web sites but I am a writer and not a merchant or coupons or anything else.

What I am is a retired airline employee who lives in Hawaii and writes travel articles about Hawaii.

But, enough about me....My advice remains sound from an operational perspective. My many years of inter-island airline experience tells me that Hawaiian Air is
perfectly within their right to deny selling single coupons over the counter regardless of whatever is wrong with the ATM. They are under no obligation (obligation is the operative word here) to accomodate anyone under those circumstances regardless what anyone said on the phone. It's NOT a Hawaiian Air thing...it's a valid caveat and consideration for consumers about ATM coupon purchases!!!

I believe in being safe rather than sorry when you're over 2400 miles from home. In all the time I've worked in the airline buisness, I have always tried to help people avoid difficulties before they begin. Afterall, in the real world, all airlines "dysfunctional" in one way or another.

A hui hou!

Dear Tiare,

Geez, what a coincidence! On your "suite101.com/welcome.cfm/hawaii", you are listed as Lottie Tagupa. At website "hawaii-nei.com/coupons.html", the contact person for buying the coupons is "L. Tagupa" plus phone number.

And you are ALWAYS on here telling folks not to buy coupons at the ATMS! Forgive me for being so skeptical - guess life is just full of coincidences!

Have a good day!

Lani

I would appreciate it if there were more posts that would be more informative rather than those singling out others. It seems like Tiare is in Hawaii, has a wealth of local information and I feel her postings are of more value than others that are harassing in nature. Besides, I have been to suite101.com and she has written well over 50 articles on Hawaii and Hawaii travel. What have these critics done? I appreciate Tiare's efforts regardless of where her name appears on any website. steven taylor.

Mahalo for the kind words Steven! I apologize Lani, I didn't think I would offend anyone when my intention was to inform people about a very real and recent ATM problem that has been occuring here in Hawaii! Speaking of Hawaii-nei.com I'm working in collaboration with my cousin who's name is Lopaka Tagupa (the L. Tagupa that was mentioned earlier)on that web site. It's a project I truly enjoy! There soon will be others "in the ohana" contributing as well! As far as coincidences go...Lopaka's has a beautiful female purebred dog named Lani, now who would've guessed that!!! She's sometimes very bossy and sometimes even rude, but she rarely is allowed on the computer! Mahalo nui loa kakou! Tiare

Tiare,

This all amounts to the same thing - your cousin couldn't ask for a better helper for her business! And I'm sure you know that! Hawaiian Airlines has quite a good reputation, and I think it's wrong to go round bashing them for your family's gain! Of course, ATM machines can occasionally run out of things, but it's not a common
thing, and Hawaiian Airlines has a solution.

It's just good for everyone to know who they're dealing with, and then make their own judgment.

And Steven, if you don't like to see the whole picture, don't look.

Lani, what's eating you? You certainly do not have any aloha spirit, and are not helping so why are you on this site? I agree with Steven. Give Tiare a break. She is being helpful by offering advice.

Cathy, I suggest asking your hotel concierge where they go to get these tickets. After all, most of them probably buy these coupons frequently for their own inter-island hoppings. Worse comes to worse, you pay full price. It is not an enormous sum. That's my thinking when I went. And the hotel staff was very helpful. Have a nice trip and don't worry about it.

Lani...I think it's time for you to take your issues elsewhere. Your attitude is certainly not appropriate here. Your posts are no longer welcomed as far as I'm concerned.

Maxine and Steven, I think that you've confused me with someone who cares whether you think I should give an opinion or not. Last time I checked, everybody's opinion was welcomed on this forum so go chill. There are some of us who believe in being fair to others, be they individuals or businesses.

Since your posts are disruptive and harassing in nature, and since they do not contribue to the flow and exchange of information for which this forum has been established, they have no value here. Therefore, I have taken steps to inform the administrators of this site to look into this matter and have requested that you not be allowed to post here again. The rules clearly do not allow any posts that are "abusive, defamatory, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, vulgar, obscene, profane, indecent or otherwise objectionable." You have made statements that are harassing, violate the privacy of others and are at the very least objectionable. I am respectfully recommending that you remove yourself from this discussion and this board and refrain from posting here in the future. I'm sorry, but your harassing and abusive comments toward what amounts to 3 people on this board is highly objectionable. steven

Hi,
We just came back from a great vacation in Hawaii where we did quite a bit of Island hopping. We had read in a travel book that it was cheaper to buy inter-island coupon books so we bought a set from Aloha Air. However, we have two tickets left over and it really won't be a bargain unless we sell them back. Where can we post a notice that we have these tickets for sale? The tickets are each good for an inter-island flight and expire in July 1999.
