I am a huge fan of pulled pork sandwiches. I will be visiting a friend in Raleigh this summer. Are there any places in the Raleigh area to get an authentic pulled pork sandwich?

Do you prefer eastern (vinegar based sauce) or western north carolina (hint of tomato in sauce, slightly sweeter) style. Also, just FYI, if you want authentic, you'll probably be getting a chopped barbecue sandwich (which automatically comes with slaw on top).

Personally, I have been to Allen & Son in Chapel Hill several times and never been disappointed.

Allen & Son is definitely a great place to go; it's probably a good 45 minutes from downtown Raleigh, though. But it'd be a great lunch or dinner on a day you spend in Durham or Chapel Hill.

The best Pulled Pork is right here in the Detroit Area. Served with the best slop sauce this side of 8 Mile. try it Hillbilly style, coleslaw on top.

'hillbilly style' ?!? What, exactly, is that ?? There are several lengthy debates on here but bottom line is whether or not you prefer eastern or western. Many places will serve it 'plain' & you can sauce it up however you like.

My guess: "Hillbilly style" is with slaw on the sandwich and not on the side.

BBQ purists will say really good barbeque needs no sauces. The sauces are applied as the (Pig) is cooked.

John, that is true, but a good sauce is great to dip your fries in.

Good points. At this point, I am inclined to say that I would like the eastern the best. I have had a few different varieties but nothing authentic. I probably would like it "hillbilly style".

OK, here's the M.O. from tonight...

We sold almost all our pulled pork sandwich specials. Our customer's went crazy for it. 3/4 of the sandwiches were served hillbilly style, with the coleslaw on top. We build it thisa way...
bottom bun
pulled pork
slop sauce
coleslaw
top bun
cut in half
and a roll of paper towels on the side.

What's left over will be thrown in porkie pig omelette's in the morning.
