Is it advisable to get one night's lodging in order to take in Pt. Reyes National Seashore? or can it be enjoyed as a day trip?

I think there's plenty to do at Pt. Reyes that you should plan to overnight nearby, although if you're really pressed for time you could do it as a very intense day trip and hope the traffic isn't too bad. One of our very favorites is 10 Inverness Way in Inverness, very near. Bodega Bay is also close by where you could stay at the Inn Between the Tides. Pt. Pelican Inn (Muir Beach) is a marvelous place to go for a meal or snack. Haven't seen the rooms, but would expect them to be good. It is a place you will always fondly remember.

Now that I think of it though, Pelican Inn at Muir Beach is not particularly easy to get to from Pt. Reyes National Seashore, so maybe you are thinking of a different one. Pelican Inn is more a place you would stay if you were going to see Muir Woods (also a must see) the day before or after.

Yes, I agree with Juju although we have never stayed at the Pelican Inn.

The Pelican Inn I was talking about is at Muir Beach. How long a drive is it from Pt. Reyes National Seashore?

Highly recommend the Olema Inn. It's recently changed owners and the food is excellent. Also recomment the Bovine Bakery for breakfast and the Cowgirl Creamery for picnic supplies.On a great day lunch at Cafe Reyes on the deck. I would guess that Pt. Reyes to Muir Beach would be about half an hour, but Muir Beach is not half as interesting as Pt. Reyes.

If you are going to Pt. Reyes to see the lighthouse, you may want to call ahead to make sure it's open. We drove 1 1/2 hours to find out that it was too windy and was closed. But it was a beautiful drive up Hwy 1.

Do not stay at the Pelican inn. That is a different experience than point reyes. One of my husband and my favorite places in the world (and we travel) is point reyes. We always stay at Dancing Coyote or Mankas, both in Innverness. WONDERFUL. If you do go - a highlight you will always remember would be a dinner at Manka's. It is pricey, but Worth IT!!!

Fun to grab a lunch at a place in Point Reyes Station (the town) and go to the cliffs at soak in the environment. Take plenty of clothes - any time of year. It gets nippy.

Oh - forgot. There is a great coffee/bakery in Point Reyes station. Stop there for that essential cup of java. You'll see it. Tiny hole in wall/ standing room only.

I agree with Sarah. We prefer Dancing Coyote or Manka's also. We have stayed at Jasmine Cottage at Gray's retreat when they were full though. Check out the Manka's web site and you will see what I mean.I think it would be a shame to travel to Bodega Bay though. It is a different experience.
