Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh
Has anyone tried the famous sandwich from The Primanti Brother's in Pittsburgh. From what I hear it is a must have while visiting the Pittsburgh area. I understand this sandwich is made with french fries, tomato and cole slaw on Italian bread and served on wax paper. Sounds interesting - will have to try next time I travel that way.

YES.....this is definitely a "must have"....fries, tomato, slaw, and your choice of meat on fresh slices of italian bread, MMMMMMM. Making me hungry just thinking about it. I went to college in Pittsburgh, and it took a little while (and some late night visits) for Primanti's to grow on me, but now that it has, this place is our first stop whenever we get into town. LOVE IT. Definitely try to hit the original Primanti's - in the strip district, open 24 hours - if you can. And the sandwiches are best when served with plenty of Heinz ketchup & Red Devil hot sauce....either on the side for dipping each bite, or right on the sandwich. Pair that with Primanti's number one best seller - Iron City beer, of course - and it's quite an experience. ENJOY! (ps, you can get a look at the sandwiches online at www.primantibrothers.com)

You people are unbelievable! I was just going to look at Foodtv.com for the name of this place as I couldn't remember it but I thought I'd look at what was going on on Fodor's this afternoon first! You saved me some time, we're going to Pittsburgh on Thursday. Thanks.

Before we went to Pittsburgh for a college interview, I researched restaurants and was determined to make it to The Strip and try Primanti Brothers. I was all excited and told my son and husband all about the place. I gotta tell you that it was one of the most disgusting things we have ever eaten. Truly, all 3 of us were sick to our stomachs afterwards. We tried the steak and cheese (steak was a patty with little holes in it that didn't resemble meat at all), tuna fish (it was pink in color and I swear it was catfood, it was so fishy tasting)and an egg sandwich that was just awful.
I cannot see how this place survives. It is not the combination of foods that we had a problem with, but the quality of the food was just deplorable. I would never suggest anyone go to Primanti Brothers.

Thanks Juldie - I was hesitant to rain on anyone's parade, but I have to admit to being pretty disappointed in Primanti's. I've lived here for decades and finally tried it a few years ago. I didn't hate it, but I also could not see what the hoopla was all about. I think it goes back to everyone's college days when they go drinking till 2:00 a.m. then head to Primanti's when just about anything would taste good. I was reading the original poster's message and thinking, geez, I hope he/she isn't disappointed. I'd hate to go out of my way to get one. On the other hand, nobody got sick!
