Post Ranch or Ventana Inn?

My husband and I will be in Big Sur for one night and want to stay at one of these. Has anyone stayed at both that can recommend one over the other? We'll probably stay in the cheapest room at either one, and those rooms appear to be a little nicer at Ventana. And which has the better restaurant?

I can only speak to Ventana, which, a few years ago, was one of the best hotel and very good restaurant experiences of my life. We had one of their standard rooms, and it was lovely, as are the grounds.

I think you've answered your own question since, in my experience, Ventana is less expensive. I prefer Ventana, although I will concede that Post Ranch has the name recognition and the best view. (Kepp in mind it's really the same view since the Ventana is just across the road, but Post Ranch is right on top of the ocean.) I think Ventana has a more laid back, back to nature feel to it.

Post Ranch Inn hands down. There is a vibe at Post Ranch Inn that I have not felt at Ventana and it has to do with the location right on the top of the ridge with the ocean directly below you. The location is simply unbelieveable. The architecture also adds to the unique nature of the place. It is truly one of a kind. The restaurant is far better than Ventana's for dinner. I've heard that lunch can be hit or miss, but have not eaten lunch there.

Post Ranch is stunning - both architecture and location. I think it has a bit of a trendier feel than Ventana. Very unusual. Both are pretty terrific, though.

Post Ranch Inn was just voted #1 among U.S. resorts in an annual survey of Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report.

lowrancs,

It's worth the extra $$$! Go there!

How are they different? They are indeed, similiar across Hwy 1, Ventana East up hill, Post Ranch Inn West and 1200 feet above the Pacific Ocean on the edge. No remarkable sound of surf from each distance and both views exceptional. I find Post far more private and a quiet nature reserve with deep respect and reverance to Big Sur's history, and in sharing this private land telling the stories from the Post family of settling this awesome land. Ventana is a more "resort" space. My personal favorite is the Post and Mickey Muennig's genius architecture, No TV/radio and 'outside world. Ventana is a beautiful stay, maybe a bit more mainstream. Both offer fine dining and again Ventana's more mainstream to Sierra Mar's creative edge.
Best answered with your discribing your dream expectations. What would you most enjoy from your stay?

Be sure to verify that they accept one night's lodging reservation. Last time we checked it was 2 night minimum. Possibly weekends-only rule. Midweek for 1 night?
