If you do not take the time to go up Mt. Hood and see the Timberline Lodge, you will have missed one of the most impressive and interesting things to do in the area. Take your appitite the lodge has wonderful food.
Also, if you like books you should see Powells Bookstore in downtown. 1 square block; pack a lunch.
I agree with the above re the wine country. The very best Pinot Noirs are being produced in Oregon.
Also for fun in downtown or very close is: Hawthorne district, 23rd Street,and Saturday Market. The trolley to Lake Oswego (follows the river all the way there). The only city in with a volcano within the city limits and Portland has the largest and the smallest city park in the country. Washington Park the biggest and Mill St part (1 square yard) the smallest.
