Portland OR coast
We will be in Portland in late April and would like to do an overnight to see a bit of the coast while we are there. Any suggestions on places to stay that would work w/ leaving Portland in mid morning and returning the following afternoon. Thought about Cannon Beach but since it seems to be about 90 minutes from Portland that it would not be far enough down the coast to put us there late in the afternoon. Any suggestions are appreciated.

There are 3 routes to the coast from Portland--all taking roughly the same time. It just depends: are you looking for rocks and seastack scenery, sandy beaches, surfing, or antique shopping and expensive restaurants?

Cannon Beach is a great choice with your time restraints.
Visit nearby Ecola State Park, Hug Point State Park, and the town of Manzanita.
Gower Street Bistro, in Cannon Beach, is a great place for dinner.
We like to stay at Schooner's Cove, which is on the beach and near shopping and restaurants, or the Inn at Cannon Beach.

Hi
Remembering that the weather in April will probably be not that warm and maybe wet, you can do two things:
1- if it is a crummy day at the Coast, you might not want to stay overnight..leaving in the am..the drive from downtown is not that long, you see a nice variety of landscapes before coming out of the forests and turn left onto 101 and there is Cannon Beach. Remember also that a lot of the area will be sleepy beach town, since it is not the season yet.
So it can be done in a day trip and you can be back in town by dark for dinner..but if you wish to stay-
SurfSand is a great place to stay in CB being on the beach with wonderful views and some rooms have fireplaces..soo cozy with the waves booming etc..
2- If you wander around CB for a while once you arrive, then drive South about 10 miles, you come to a wonderful area called Arch Cape..I love this place!

We stayed at the Inn at Arch Cape for a couple of nights in September, they have fireplaces in their rooms, they are on the beach side of the highway..
And you are a short drive to Manzanita..which I also love lol...you might notice that I am still very in love with Oregon
So I recommend these two places .. during the season you have 2 night minimums, hoping in April there are no minimums.
Places to eat..
Cannon Beach has a lot of restaurants..don't know if they will all be open. but Mo's is fun, for sitting right in front of the windows with the waves right on the other side and have a big bowl of clam chowder.
Gower St Bistro is better , chowder is better and they are the sister Bistro of the Everestt Street Bistro in Portland in the Pearl.
The Wayfarer is good, Ecola Seafood is great for take away, if you want a picnic or something in your room..
Hope this helps..enjoy your trip ~

Cannon Beach and Seaside are both great choices. Many people prefer Cannon Beach because feels more quaint and less commercial (no McDonalds-type places), and the beach itself at Cannon Beach is superb and scenic. Haystack Rock on the beach there is one of the most photographed scenes in Oregon.
Seaside isn't so bad, though. Its little downtown there, away from the commercialism of Hwy 101, has its own charm.
Both are super easy to get to from Portland via Highway 26 and about the same distance north or south on 101 from Portland.

We just got back from Cannon Beach and Portland. The drive on the 26 was quite easy. We love Cannon Beach and would highly recommend it for a night. We always stay at the Stephanie Inn and always enjoy our meals at Bistro (different from Gower St. Bistro) and Newman's (fabulous meal there this trip).
Enjoy!

Glad you enjoyed Gower St. and Newman's, two of our favorite places in Cannon Beach. We just returned from a 9 day trip to Oregon, we based in Seaside at our beach cottage, it was wonderful!
There is a new complex in Seaside called the Rivertide Suites which is very nice, all rooms are full suites with flat screen TV's, there is also a nice indoor pool area here. Have fun! ***kim***

You're welcome, we were given a tour of the rooms, they really are gorgeous, everything is so new and clean, a great addition to the Seaside lodging scene and just a short walk away from the ocean!
Any further questions on the area let me know, we spend several weeks a year at our beach cottage in Seaside, we just returned from there last week after a 9 day trip to the area, very fun! ***kim***

I have enjoyed ya'lls information so much. We will be ret. to the Oregon coast and want some information on places to stay on the beach, places to eat and visit. We have visited and stayed at places from Newport to Brookings, and now want to head north. Just have to have another dose of my birthplace. gg

Hopingtotravel - I remember in college we would go to a great place in Newport and stay in little cabins with a fireplace - they were $9.00 per night! No two or three night minimums back in those days either. Those days are long gone - too bad.

I have fond memories of the Bungalow City Motel in Seaside; $10, or maybe even less... Yup, things have changed. Three days ago I was riding in a jeep up a mountain side in Puerto Vallarta, and the woman from northern Wisconsin sitting next to me was asking if Stephanie Inn is "really all that?"
