Portland Days Inn and Amtrak
Can anybody tell me what its like in the Portland Downtown Days Inn city center?
Or recommend low cost hotels in Downtown Portland?
Also I was going to do quite a bit of travelling with Amtrak. Are there likely to go bust?

Coincidentally, I drove by that Days Inn today and remembered this post. (I assume this is the Days Inn at the corner of 5th Ave and Clay.) I didn't go in, but it looks fine from the outside. It is in a decent location vis a vis the downtown. While it is towards the southern end of the downtown, it isn't far (one could easily use public tranportation and be in the heart of the main area within a couple of minutes. It would also be a pleasant walk.) Plus, it is near the great waterfront development and parks and lots of green.
On Amtrak, I have no idea. I've found when I've not done things anticipating the worst, it has never happened....

I stayed at the Portland, Oregon Days Inn about 4 to 5 years ago for the simple reason that it was centrally loc ated and reasonable. I believe it had the added incentive of free parking in a downtown hotel. It was a little bit down at the heeels, but may have been rehovated a bit since then. GHowever, it wasn't really bad, and the price and location were very good. You might inquire whether any changes have been made in the last few years.
