This summer, my 8 yo daughter and I were on our way home from the emergency room well after midnight one weekend. (She had been hit on the head - on the bounce - by a foul ball at a 11/12 yr old softball game.) On the Interstate, two lanes over from us to our left was a tractor-trailer rig. It slung a piece of gravel up which struck the window of the back door on the driver's side. As the window shattered into all the pebbles, it sounded like someone had slung a bucket full of gravel down the side of my car. I called my husband on the cell phone and pulled over to the side of the road to find out what kind of damage had happened to my car. I was stunned to find that all the noise came from the window shattering.

Yea. I was the dugout mom and saw the ball land between a half-dozen kids then bounce up to tag one on the forehead; then realized the child was mine! She was OK, but started complaining about an upset stomach as the game ended. Of course an hour after we got to the Pediatric ER, she was completely fine.
When the rock hit the window, it sounded like someone took a bucket of gravel and threw it up against a metal (uninsulated) garage door. It scared the snot out of us! My daughter almost paniced! Of course it happened as the interstate went through the "wrong" part of town! Thank goodness the glass stayed in place til it was replaced.
