Husband and I were planning a trip to Kauai for September, 2008, but a conference in Maui has come up for May, 2008. If I attend the conference, then my job will pick up my airfare and 5 nights lodging.
So. . . we're going to Maui in May. The conference is at the Hyatt.
I'm looking for a two bedroom, two bathroom condo in the same general area as the Hyatt. We're bringing our daughter (she'll be four years old) and my mom may be coming along, too.
We definately want a condo and not a hotel room. We like having the kitchen, bbq grill, two separate bedrooms and two bathrooms, and a washing machine and dryer.
We don't care about swimming pools, tennis courts, or golf. We're not interested in nightlife for this trip or fancy restuarants since we'll have our daughter with us. Walking distance to the beach would be nice, but it's not that important to us.
We like active vacations: hiking, biking, snorkelling, boogie boarding, driving, exploring, etc. We're not very good at sitting on the beach for more than about an hour.
We've only been to the Big Island, and we loved it. There was so much to do and see! I'm hoping we'll love Maui as much as we loved the Big Island.
Anyway, I've been searching Fodors and I've been searching VRBO for condos. There certainly seem to be a lot of options. Do you have any favorites? We're looking to spend around $200/night (less is good, too ).
Thanks!

Just a thought?
Why not get out of Lahaina after the conference. Might be a real change of pace to go over to Wailea or Hana. Hana being the more remote of the two. I have not been to Maui in a while so I forget the distance from Lahaina to Wailea.

Thanks, Sarah. I've looked briefly into staying in Hana -- it looks beautiful! But I'm a little reluctant to move to the other side of the island because my conference lasts five days so we'd only have two days in another location.

Here's a map that shows the condos & hotels in the area.
I did stay at Maui Kaanapali Villas & it was nice. But, that was 15 years ago so I don't know what they are like now.

I just got back yesterday from Maui. We stayed in a 1BR condo at the Whaler, which is on the beach, is not (in my opinion) a luxury property, and is still quite a bit pricier than your budget (albeit in August, which is high season). You're not going to be able to stay on the beach for your budget (or twice your budget, sad to say) for a 2BR unit. Sorry I can't help with properties that aren't directly on the beach.
